RAD CEO responds to the Budget

While there are some welcome measures that could help ease financial pressures on rural households, we're disappointed that the Chancellor has not removed the 5% VAT on domestic heating oil and LPG.

Our CEO said: "We welcome the reduction in VAT on electricity, but households reliant on heating oil deserve the same support. While removing the 4% import tariff on qualifying kerosene imports sounds positive, there is no guarantee these savings will be passed on to consumers rather than absorbed elsewhere in the supply chain."

Rural communities should not be left behind when it comes to affordable heating.

🏡 Rural poverty doesn't always look like poverty.

Today's inflation figures have highlighted rising fuel prices. But here in rural Derbyshire, the impact goes far beyond filling up the car.

🚗 Driving is often essential, not optional.
🔥 Many homes rely on expensive heating oil or LPG.
🛒 Accessing affordable food can mean a long journey.
❤️ And our local charities and volunteers are facing rising costs just when communities need them most.

Living in a beautiful village doesn't mean life is affordable. Behind the picture-postcard scenery, many households are making difficult choices about heating, food and travel.

At Rural Action Derbyshire, we know that where you live can make a real difference to what it costs to live.

Rural poverty is real. It's often hidden. And it deserves to be seen.

When someone controls who you see, what you do, or how you feel about yourself, that's not love. Its coercive control.

This October, and every month, The Willow Project is raising awareness of domestic abuse. In rural communities, isolation can make it harder for victim-survivors to recognise abuse, seek support, and access help. Research shows that people experiencing abuse in rural areas can take up to 25% longer to get the support they need.

Awareness saves lives. Understanding the signs is the first step.

We had a lovely day yesterday at the High Peak Together Health & Wellbeing Event in Glossop. 💚

It was great to meet local people, chat to some brilliant organisations and share a little bit about what Rural Action Derbyshire does across our rural communities.

Lots of great conversations, connections and ideas and a really lovely reminder of just how much is happening across the High Peak.

Thanks to High Peak CVS for bringing everyone together! The lunch bag was much appreciated too!🫶🏼

"Mum sent them £140,000."

This BBC story is a really powerful reminder that scams don't just happen to "other people".

This is exactly why scams awareness matters, particularly in rural communities, where isolation can make people more vulnerable to fraud and less likely to have someone close by who notices a change.

Worth a read 👇
And perhaps a reminder to check in with someone you care about. ❤️
