Local Government Reorganisation: the picture has changed again.

Today’s/The recent announcement that Local Government Reorganisation in Derby and Derbyshire has been paused while the Government carries out a review is a significant development. We know that rural communities experience services differently. As plans are reviewed, it is vital that rural realities are understood and that our communities have opportunities to help shape future services, whatever they will look like.

This pause in the process does not change that. If anything, this period of review provides another important opportunity to listen, gather evidence and make sure rural voices are part of the conversation from the outset.

Rural Action Derbyshire will continue working with communities and partners across the county to help ensure that, whatever comes next, rural Derbyshire is not left behind.

🚨Common Benefit and Welfare Scams to Be Aware Of🚨

1. Fraudulent Universal Credit Messages
Scammers often pretend to be from or have previously worked for the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), claiming that you are entitled to increased Universal Credit payments, a special grant, or additional financial support. They may then ask for a fee to release the money or request sensitive information such as your National Insurance number.

Things to look out for:
🚨 Unexpected emails, texts, or phone calls about benefit increases.
🚨 Requests for upfront payments to access financial support.
🚨 Anyone asking for personal details without clear verification.
🚨 Remember, genuine government departments will not contact you unexpectedly to request money or sensitive information.

2. Paid Benefit Application Services
Some criminals advertise services that claim to help people apply for benefits such as Housing Benefit, Personal Independence Payment (PIP), or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA). They often charge a fee and may promise a quicker decision or guaranteed success.

Things to look out for:
🚨 Claims that they can fast-track your application.
🚨 Requests for payment before support is provided.
🚨 Promises of guaranteed benefit awards.

Benefit applications can be completed free of charge through official government channels. Advice and support are also available from trusted organisations.

Your local council and Citizens Advice provides guidance on a wide range of welfare and financial wellbeing matters. They can help you check your benefit entitlement, complete application forms, and apply for concessions and additional support.

3. Pension Credit Fraud
Older adults are frequently targeted by scammers who claim they can help them access additional Pension Credit payments. These fraudsters may ask for a processing fee or request bank account details and other confidential information.

Things to look out for:
🚨 Unsolicited calls or messages about Pension Credit.
🚨 Requests for payment to process a claim.
🚨 Pressure to provide banking information over the phone.

If you're unsure whether a contact is genuine, end the conversation and verify the information through official channels.

Why the Conference is Important

For those living in rural communities, isolation can be weaponised by perpetrators of domestic abuse. Abuse in rural settings often continues for around 25% longer due to barriers such as limited local support services and a lack of reliable transport. For many victims, the workplace is their only safe space.

The Derbyshire Rural Domestic Abuse In The Workplace Conference will provide practical insights, guidance and tools to help employers create safer, more supportive workplaces for their staff.

🚨 Don't let scammers rush you! 🚨

Scam emails are increasingly offering "free rewards" in return for completing a quick survey.

The catch? The survey link often leads to a fake website designed to steal your personal information.

Before clicking:
πŸ” Check the sender's email address
πŸ” Review website URLs carefully
⏸️ Take a moment to pause and think

Remember: urgency is one of a scammer's favourite tactics!

Report suspicious emails via and report fraudulent websites to the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC).

πŸ”Ή Inspect the sender's email address for spelling mistakes or unusual characters.

Received a suspicious email? Report it as spam and delete it.

If you've been affected by a scam, report it to Action Fraud.

Three little letters. One big change for Derbyshire.

Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) may not have been on many people's radar, but the decisions being made over the next two years could shape local services, investment and representation for decades to come.

In her latest Derbyshire Life column, Emma Simpson explores what LGR means for Derbyshire, why rural communities must remain at the heart of the conversation, and why now is the time for residents to get involved.

⚽ Were you paying attention today? ⚠️

Who didn't come into work?
Who was unusually quiet?
Who seemed anxious or distracted?
Who was wearing extra clothing on a hot day?

It may not have been because England lost last night, but because they may have been carrying far more than disappointment into work today.

We spend so much of our lives at work that colleagues are often the first people to notice when something isn't right.

If someone disclosed domestic abuse to you today, would you feel confident responding? Would your organisation be ready to support them?

If you're not sure, pass this on to your employer.

The Willow Project is hosting a one-day Employer Conference in Matlock on the 14th of September, bringing together employers who want to create safer, more supportive workplaces for victims and survivors of domestic abuse.

βœ… Hear from lived-experience speakers
βœ… Learn practical ways to support your workforce
βœ… Meet the Employers' Initiative on Domestic Abuse (EIDA) and discover resources that can help your organisation make a real difference

This promises to be a powerful and transformative day.
