Swipe to clean the sculpture! ✨
Our Conservation Assistants have been carrying out this year's historic sculpture clean, focusing on 11 marble sculptures along the Broadwalk in the garden. Commissioned and collected by the 6th Duke in the early-mid 19th century, many of these sculptures were created by Francesco Bienaime in Carrara, Italy; home to the world-famous marble from which they were carved. As a porous natural stone, marble is vulnerable to weathering, pollution and biological growth. Through careful conservation cleaning, our team helps protect these historic sculptures while preserving the character they have acquired over nearly two centuries outdoors. Each sculpture is thoroughly condition checked before being gently cleaned using specialist conservation techniques and materials. The process removes damaging biological growth and pollutants while ensuring the historic surface is treated with care.
This vital work forms part of the ongoing conservation programme of Chatsworth House Trust, the charity that cares for Chatsworth and its collections. Your support helps us to protect historic items, landscapes and heritage for future generations to enjoy.
