The selection of Mullaquana Station as the preferred desalination plant site marks an important milestone for Northern Water, enabling Project planning, procurement and environmental assessment activities to proceed.

What’s that barge doing out there?

Noticed a barge off the coast near Cape Hardy? It is gathering important information about the surrounding environment as part of the Northern Water project. Over the Christmas/New Year period the barge will be moored at Tumby Bay.

A second barge will soon be assembled at Whyalla Port using local crews. From there it will be off to gather information near Mullaquana Station, about 20km south of Whyalla.

The barge sections were trucked in and assembled locally. At Port Lincoln, local crane company Shillabeer supported Australian Barge Hire to assemble one barge using a 90-tonner and a franna crane, over two days.

Boaties take note, a Notice to Mariners is in place near Cape Hardy and near Mullaquana Station until April 2025: https://tinyurl.com/yeynkvwx

Industries in northern South Australia and the Upper Spencer Gulf currently depend on water from the Great Artesian Basin and the River Murray. Desalination offers a climate-independent alternative, creating a new water source to help reduce our reliance on these traditional, precious sources.
