In 2021 South Australia became the first Australian state or territory to ban single-use plastics, and since then the state has continued to lead the way in sustainable change, implementing further bans each year.

The final stage of the state's planned bans came into effect on 1 September 2025, and included the world's first ban on single-use soy sauce fish.

Now is the time to embrace the bans, and choose a cleaner and more sustainable future for our state.

It's official! South Australia's new single-use plastic bans are now in place.

Items banned from sale, supply and distribution in South Australia (with some temporary exemptions*) include:
🍎 plastic barrier bags when used for fruit, vegetables, nuts and confectionery
🛍 thick plastic shopping bags, including singlet style bags and plastic laminated paper shopping bags*
☕ single-use plastic hot and cold beverage containers (including coffee cups) and their lids*
🥡 single-use plastic food containers when used for ready-to-eat takeaway food*
🥩 Expanded polystyrene (EPS) consumer food and beverage containers and trays
🎈 plastic confetti and plastic balloon sticks/ties
🍞 plastic food bag tags*

South Australia is banning more single-use plastic products starting tomorrow, 1 September.

Alternatives to the banned items include reusable and certified compostable products, and the alternatives library on the Replace the Waste website features some of these options.

It's time to replace the waste.

The next stage of South Australia’s single-use plastic bans will come into effect this Sunday, 1 September.

Items to be banned from sale, supply and distribution in South Australia (with some temporary exemptions*) include:

🍎 plastic barrier bags when used for fruit, vegetables, nuts and confectionery
🛍 thick plastic shopping bags, including singlet style bags and plastic laminated paper shopping bags*
☕ single-use plastic hot and cold beverage containers (including coffee cups) and their lids*

🎃👻 You can make this Halloween a sustainable one with these tips to replace the waste and go plastic-free:

1. Reuse your costume and accessories from last year, or do a swap with your friends
2. Hire a costume, so it can be re-used
3. Choose a costume that can be made with paper or cardboard, like a robot, astronaut or rocket
4. Choose a costume that can be made with old sheets, like a ghost, witch, or magician
5. Paint your face, instead of making or buying a costume
6. Use a paper bag to collect your treats in

Today’s the day. South Australia is taking the next step of a phased and manageable move away from single-use plastics, with a ban on single-use plastic bowls and plates, plastic-stemmed cotton buds, and plastic pizza savers.
