Did you know the future of lunar exploration is taking shape just 40 minutes north of Adelaide? 🌑

In the quiet, rolling paddocks of Adelaide University’s Roseworthy campus, the red dirt of South Australia doubles as the moon’s surface, providing a world-class testbed for the next frontier of off-Earth exploration and the human endurance that will underpin it.

Teachers, schools and community groups: your next mission is calling! 🚀

Give students the chance to think like astronauts, engineers and scientists through the free SPACE MISSION 2040 competition.

⏰ Applications close 28 August.

Find out more via the post below ⬇️

🚀 Applications are closing soon for the 2026 SPACE MISSION 2040 Primary School Competition.

There's still time for schools and community groups to get on board and inspire the next generation of Australian space explorers, engineers and innovators.

This year's challenges are tailored to three age groups:

Years 1–2: Design and build a spacesuit for exploring the Moon.
Years 3–4: Design a spacecraft for the 147-day journey to Mercury.
Years 5–6: Create a rover to explore Venus and collect rock samples.

Give your students the opportunity to think like scientists, engineers and astronauts while developing creativity, teamwork and problem-solving skills. Brought to you by Aviation/Aerospace Australia and supported by the Agency, it's completely free to participate, with lesson resources, expert support and a virtual experience at the Australian Space Discovery Centre included.

🙌🏽 The first successful test flight of a fully Australian-designed and manufactured solid rocket motor has taken place at the Koonibba Test Range in South Australia’s far west.

The 100kg-class Koonibba Rising 3.0 rocket motor was developed through the Advanced Rocket Motor Technology Demonstrator Program, a partnership between the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) and Thales Australia.

The flight was conducted by Southern Launch in collaboration with DSTG, demonstrating the state’s capability to support the testing and validation of advanced rocket and defence technologies.

The mission also delivered local benefits, with Koonibba community members employed throughout the campaign and a student from Koonibba Aboriginal School designing the mission patch.
