📱 Charge your phone on your bed at night? It’s time to find a new spot.
Phones and chargers create heat during normal charging. Beds, pillows, couches and other soft surfaces can trap that heat and block airflow, causing a battery to overheat.
Instead, charge your devices on a hard, flat surface like a table, desk or bare floor.
And pay attention to your device. If it becomes very hot, starts to swell, smells strange, leaks, smokes or makes popping or hissing sounds, stop using it. Those can be signs of a damaged battery that could overheat and start a fire.
It’s Fire Prevention Week, and this year’s message is simple: Charge into Fire Safety.

🔌 That cheap replacement charger might cost more than you think.
Using the wrong charger can damage your device’s battery and increase the risk of fire. Off-brand chargers may also lack important safety protections.
For Fire Prevention Week, Winder Fire Department is reminding residents to:
⚡ Use the cord and charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.
⚡ Look for products listed by a nationally recognized testing laboratory, such as UL, ETL or CSA.
⚡ Unplug your device when it’s fully charged.
When it comes to phones, tablets, laptops and other rechargeable devices, safer charging starts before you plug in.

🔥 Happy Retirement, Chief Whiting! 🚒
After 34 years of service with the City of Winder Fire Department, Fire Chief Matt Whiting is officially retiring.
Chief Whiting began his career with the department as a part-time firefighter and went on to serve nearly 15 years as Fire Chief. During his career, the department grew from just a handful of full-time firefighters to more than 40, while expanding its capabilities and services to meet the needs of a growing community.
But when Chief Whiting was asked last year what legacy he hoped to leave, his answer wasn't about equipment, stations or titles. He said he simply wanted people to know that he cared about the firefighters, cared about the community and worked to make Winder better.
After 34 years, we think that legacy speaks for itself.
Thank you, Chief Whiting, for your leadership, your service and your commitment to the City of Winder and the Winder Fire Department.
We wish you a long and happy retirement — with plenty of time on the golf course! ⛳

🔥 Burn permits are available again beginning today, Oct. 1!

Georgia’s annual summer burn ban ended Sept. 30. City of Winder residents who plan to burn should keep these requirements in mind:

🔥 Burn permits are required and are available free of charge at Winder Fire Station 1. Permits are valid through the end of the calendar year, but permission to burn must be obtained each day you plan to burn.

🔥 Only hand-piled, natural vegetation may be burned.

🔥 Burning must take place on open ground — no burn barrels — and safely away from buildings or other combustible materials.

🔥 Fires must be monitored at all times, with a water hose nearby.

A firefighter will review the rules with you when your permit is issued.

This morning, the Winder community gathered at Fire Station 1 to remember the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001, and honor the first responders who answered the call.
During the ceremony, the names of the 343 firefighters and 62 law enforcement officers who died were read aloud. Retired NYPD Officer Simone DiPaola shared remarks, and members of the Winder Fire and Police honor guards lowered the flag.
The program also included a wreath laying, music, Taps and the ringing of the bell in remembrance of those who lost their lives 25 years ago today.
We remember their lives, their courage and their sacrifice.
