Ground and water search at Fort Yargo concludes; police continue search for Erica Gibson

WINDER, Ga. — Sept. 3, 2026 — The Winder Police Department and other agencies are concluding the ground and water search at Fort Yargo State Park for 21-year-old Erica Gibson.

During the investigation, officers received information indicating that Gibson left Fort Yargo on her own Wednesday evening. Based on that information, search operations at the park are being discontinued.

The search for Gibson remains ongoing. Winder Police continue to follow leads and are working to locate Gibson to ensure her safety and well-being.

The Winder Police Department appreciates the assistance of the Winder Fire Department, Barrow County Sheriff's Office, Barrow County Fire Department, Barrow County Emergency Management, Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency, Georgia Department of Natural Resources (GADNR) Law Enforcement Division, GADNR Parks and Historic Sites Division, and Georgia State Patrol Dive Team, as well as everyone who assisted with the search at Fort Yargo.

Gibson is 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighs approximately 132 pounds. She was last seen wearing blue jean shorts and a green and gray shirt.

Anyone who sees Gibson or has information about her whereabouts should call 911 immediately. Information may also be provided to the Winder Police Department at 678-425-6849 or [email protected].

Multiple agencies searching for missing woman at Fort Yargo State Park

WINDER, Ga. — Sept. 3, 2026 — Multiple local and state agencies are searching the Fort Yargo State Park area for 21-year-old Erica Gibson after her cell phone was found at Fort Yargo Wednesday.

The discovery of Gibson’s phone prompted authorities to begin trying to locate her. During the investigation, authorities learned information that raised concerns about her emotional well-being, prompting an extensive search of the park and surrounding area.

The Winder Police Department, Winder Fire Department, Barrow County Sheriff's Office, Barrow County Fire Department, Barrow County Emergency Management, Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency, Georgia Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division, and Georgia State Patrol Dive Team are involved in the search.

Gibson is 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighs approximately 132 pounds. She was last seen at Fort Yargo wearing blue jean shorts and a green and gray shirt and is believed to be on foot.

Crews continue to search the area and follow available information in an effort to locate Gibson. Based on information, officers are concerned about her emotional well-being and at this time, and there is no indication that foul play is involved.

Winder Police Department’s K9 Bella has received donation of body armor

Winder Police Department, GA - K9 Bella has received a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. K9 Bella’s vest was sponsored by Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. and embroidered with the sentiment “Born to Love-Trained to Serve-Loyal Always”.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., established in 2009, is a 501(c)(3) charity whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. This potentially lifesaving body armor for four-legged K9 officers is U.S. made, custom fitted, and National Institute of Justice (NIJ) certified. Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has provided over 6,631 vests valued at $6.9 million to K9s in all 50 states, made possible by both private and corporate donations.

The program is open to U.S. dogs at least 20 months old and actively employed and certified with law enforcement or related agencies. K9s with expired vests are also eligible to participate. There are an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s throughout the United States.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., accepts tax-deductible contributions in any amount, while a single donation of $1,050 will sponsor one vest. Each vest has a value of $1800.00, weighs an average of 4-5 lbs., and comes with a five-year warranty. For more information or to learn about volunteer opportunities, please call (508) 824-6978. Thank you to Continental Adjusters in Monroe, Georgia, for donating three medical kits to our department!
The kits contain supplies designed to help officers provide emergency medical care to their K-9 partners in the event of an injury and will be provided to each of our three K-9 patrol teams: Cpl. Hunter Cureington & Max, Cpl. Tristen Perin & Bella, and Cpl. Stephen Smallwood & Si.
