Letters to Sam Project

09/30/2026

There is something incredibly sacred about a handwritten letter. For the past two decades, the Letters to Sam project has served as a safe, anonymous haven for people to share their truest thoughts, artwork, and stories with a complete stranger.

Every letter is received with care, and I write back to anyone who requests a response within the USA.

As we begin compiling these beautiful pieces of mail into a coffee table book, we invite you to pick up a pen and join this collaborative community artifact.

Who is Sam? That’s part of the journey.

What happens when you write a letter to someone you’ve never met, whose gender and identity you don't even know?

For 20 years, the Letters to Sam project has been collecting the anonymous stories, art, and hearts of strangers via snail mail.

Every letter gets photographed, and every letter gets a response upon request within the USA.

We are officially gathering these decades of human connection into a coffee table book, and the mailbox is open for new entries.

📦 An Invitation to a 20-Year Mystery: The "Letters to Sam" Project 📬

For two decades, an anonymous, collaborative snail mail experiment has been quietly unfolding. People from all walks of life have sent letters, packages, and notes to "Sam"—without ever knowing my true identity, my gender, or who is on the receiving end.

Every single piece of mail is received and photographed—and written back to upon request within the USA.

Now, these twenty years of anonymous human connection, shared secrets, and beautiful letters are being compiled into a coffee table book.

Want to be part of the story?

We want to hear from you.
Share your thoughts, your secrets, your art, or your stories.

Every submission is kept completely anonymous, and sending your mail constitutes consent to be featured in the upcoming book.

If everyone sends a penny…..wow! What an idea!
Do you think we should try it?
What can you send this week? A sticker? A hand written note? A Polaroid photo? A doodle? A finished crossword or sudoku? A traffic ticket? Your redacted credit card bill from 1993? A ticket stub to see Cher live in 1973? A coaster from your favorite pub on a backpacking trip from college? A list of to do items from last week? Or what else can you think of????

Did you want me to write you back??
