Today, we pause to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation. Memorial Day is a time to reflect on their sacrifice, the freedoms we’re able to enjoy because of them, and the families who carry their legacy forward. It’s a moment to step back from the day to day and acknowledge the cost of the principles we often take for granted.

As we remember those who served, we’re reminded of the values they embodied—courage, integrity, and a commitment to something greater than themselves. Their example encourages us to approach our work and our communities with a deeper sense of purpose and gratitude.

Jim Collins’ “What to Make of a Life”, released April 7th, 2026, offers a powerful look at how leaders navigate the defining moments that shape who we become. Drawing on decades of research and vivid life stories, Collins — who served as the Chair for the Study of Leadership from 2012 to 2013 at West Point - The U.S. Military Academy— explores the “cliffs” that disrupt us, the “fog” that obscures our direction, and the “inner fire” that fuels purpose.

For leaders committed to growth, his insights illuminate how to build a meaningful life grounded in self‑knowledge, resilience, and the courage to continually reinvent ourselves. A timely reminder that leadership begins with understanding who we are and choosing our path with intention.

About Jim Collins:

When bestselling author Jim Collins first arrived at West Point, he expected to find a strict, top‑down, command‑and‑control environment. What he encountered instead was a culture grounded in humility, service, and a relentless commitment to developing leaders of character. That contrast didn’t just surprise him — it fundamentally reshaped his understanding of what great leadership truly looks like.

This week, we concluded the in-person portion of Battle-Tested Open Enrollment 2 at The Thayer Hotel at West Point on the grounds of West Point - The U.S. Military Academy — marking another inspiring milestone in this year’s BTOE series.

Over the course of this program, participants engaged in immersive, hands-on leadership challenges designed to hone decision-making, elevate team performance, and deepen their ability to lead effectively in complex environments.

We extend our gratitude to our Senior Advisors, Colonel (Ret.) Donna Brazil and Brigadier General (Ret.) Tim Trainor, for sharing their experience and perspective, which added real-world context to every discussion and exercise. Their guidance was invaluable in bridging leadership theory with practice.

As this cohort moves forward, we’re excited to see how they apply these battle-tested lessons to drive meaningful impact across their teams and organizations.
