Grantmakers In Health (GIH) is a nonprofit, educational organization dedicated to helping foundations and corporate giving programs to improve health.

Grantmakers In Health (GIH) is a nonprofit, educational organization dedicated to helping foundations and corporate giving programs improve the health of all people. Its mission is to foster communication and collaboration among grantmakers and others, and to help strengthen the grantmaking community's knowledge, skills, and effectiveness. Formally launched in 1982, GIH is known today as the professional home for health grantmakers, and a resource for grantmakers and others seeking expertise and information on the field of health philanthropy. GIH generates and disseminates information about health issues and grantmaking strategies that work in health by offering issue-focused forums, workshops, and large annual meetings; publications; continuing education and training; technical assistance; consultation on programmatic and operational issues; and by conducting studies of health philanthropy. Additionally, the organization brokers professional relationships and connects health grantmakers with each other as well as with grantmakers in other fields whose work has important implications for health. It also develops targeted programs and activities, and provides customized services on request to individual funders. GIH is committed to promoting diversity and cultural competency in its programming, personnel and employment practices, and governance. It views diversity as a fundamental element of social justice and integral to its mission of helping grantmakers improve the health of all people. Diverse voices and viewpoints deepen our understanding of differences in health outcomes and health care delivery, and strengthen our ability to fashion just solutions. GIH uses the term, diversity, broadly to encompass differences in the attributes of both individuals (such as race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, physical ability, religion, and socioeconomic status) and organizations (foundations and giving programs of differing sizes, missions, geographic locations, and approaches to grantmaking).

GIH has joined the American Public Health Association, the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health, the Liberty Health Alliance, and 167 public health and health policy deans, chairs, and scholars in an amicus brief challenging the CMS interim final rule on Medicaid work requirements.

Filed in Taylor v. Kennedy in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, the brief argues that the rule exceeds congressional intent by narrowing H.R. 1’s exemption for people who are medically frail or have serious health conditions, and that its added documentation requirements could cost eligible people their coverage. It also cites evidence from Arkansas and Georgia, where earlier work requirements led to substantial coverage losses without measurable gains in employment.

A recent Grantmaker Profile features GIH Funding Partner Rx Foundation, which supports community organizing, policy advocacy, and civic engagement to address the root causes of poor health.

Founded in 2002 by Serena M. Hatch, the Massachusetts-based foundation has spent the past decade shifting its grantmaking toward building community power, working with partners in at least 15 states, many led by historically excluded communities. Its Building Capacity for Health Advocacy program makes three- to five-year commitments to hub organizations, while its Healthy Communities cohort provides general operating support to community-led organizations and trusted messengers.

“Over the past decade, Rx has evolved both what we fund and how we fund,” said Rx Foundation Executive Director Jennie Riley.

Two years after Hurricane Helene, GIH Board Member Dr. Susan Mims, President and CEO of GIH Funding Partner Dogwood Health Trust, shared lessons from western North Carolina’s recovery at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond’s Investing in Rural America Conference in Asheville.

Mims described recovery in stages—immediate relief, recovery, and long-term rebuilding—and stressed that philanthropy alone cannot meet the need. “It can be rapid, it can be flexible,” she said of philanthropic support after a storm, “but it is not at all sufficient.” Recovery, she said, requires partnerships and government funding, built on relationships that exist before disaster strikes.

“Immediate post-disaster is not the time to kind of go meet somebody new,” Mims said.

At the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond’s Investing in Rural America conference, attendees discussed how to keep opportunity close to home.

As states prepare to implement Medicaid work requirements under H.R. 1, a new issue brief from GIH Funding Partner Milbank Memorial Fund draws lessons from five states that have already put similar policies in place: Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Montana, and Nebraska.

The Congressional Budget Office estimates that more than 5.3 million Medicaid expansion adults will lose coverage because of the requirements. In Nebraska’s early rollout, 92 percent of those who lost coverage had not responded to verification requests. The brief recommends automatic data matching, digital income verification, outreach tailored to internet access, language, and disability, and employment assistance services.

GIH Funding Partner The California Endowment has broken ground on the Robert K. Ross Center for Hope and Healing, a development on a former parking lot in downtown Los Angeles designed to support people affected by the justice system, including those returning from incarceration.

Slated for completion in 2028, the site will include affordable apartments, a learning and job training center, a health hub for mental and physical wellness, and community meeting space. Its design, informed by research on how surroundings affect stress, includes 120 trees, natural materials, and apartments facing a quieter central courtyard.

“For the people who are served and touched by this, we think it creates a different road to reduce recidivism and a much healthier pathway for these folks,” said The California Endowment President and CEO Brenda Solórzano.

GIH Funding Partner The Duke Endowment has awarded $100 million to North Carolina Children’s, the new pediatric health system created by Duke Health and UNC Health. It is the largest philanthropic grant to date for the project.

The planned campus in Apex will include a 500-bed acute care children’s hospital, a 70-bed pediatric behavioral health hospital, an ambulatory surgical center, and research and medical education facilities. Groundbreaking is planned for 2027.

“We believe this project has the potential to transform children’s health care,” said Charles Lucas III, Chair of The Duke Endowment’s Board of Trustees.

A new Grantmaker Profile features GIH Funding Partner the Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg, created in 2013 from the sale of Bayfront Health System to advance health equity in southern Pinellas County, Florida.

The foundation focuses on the South St. Petersburg Community Redevelopment Area, where redlining, disinvestment, and discrimination have shaped the region’s most severe health disparities. Its initiatives include St. Pete Thrives, which offers up to $50,000 each to 10 nonprofits, and a Systems Change Leadership Cohort that is training 20 local organizations.

“Philanthropy cannot do this work alone, and progress will be incremental and not always linear,” said Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg President and CEO Dr. Kanika Tomalin.

Good nutrition is essential to good oral health as well as overall health.

In a new Views from the Field article, Sumayo Mohamed, Catherine Seneviratne, Steve Metcalf, and Rochelle Smith of Arcora Foundation describe how the foundation stepped in when grant delays in summer 2025 put APOYO, a food and outreach organization serving Latino and immigrant families in Ellensburg, Washington, at risk. Arcora funded APOYO’s operations, and the two organizations then worked together to add oral health education to food distribution.

The authors argue that philanthropy can reach more people by investing in trusted community organizations, such as food banks, rather than building new programs.

More than a decade ago, GIH Funding Partner REACH Healthcare Foundation began exploring how the Kansas City region would function if it truly embraced welcoming and belonging for immigrant and refugee populations.

In a new Views from the Field article, Carla Gibson of REACH, Rachel Peric of Welcoming America, and Greg Valdovino of the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce trace that work from a 2017 health equity report to the Welcoming KC Plan, with implementation led by the Chamber, and the city’s Certified Welcoming designation in April 2026.

The authors argue that welcoming efforts advance both health equity and regional economic growth, and they share lessons for funders on investing in the conditions that shape health and building relationships with local champions.

Violence is increasingly understood as a public health problem. But treating it as one also requires reckoning with trauma, which can undermine the self-regulation skills that behavior change depends on.

In a new Views from the Field article, Molly Baldwin, Founder and CEO of Roca, Inc., Jennifer Clammer, Executive Director of the Roca Impact Institute, and Strategy Advisor Allie Maynard describe Rewire CBT, a nonclinical adaptation of cognitive behavioral therapy developed with Massachusetts General Hospital. It helps young people at the highest risk of violence create an 8- to 12-second pause between impulse and action, and Roca has trained more than 3,000 frontline staff across 81 institutions in the approach.

The authors urge health funders to invest in the practice, coaching, and evaluation that turn initial training into lasting skills.
