📰 Read All About it | 'Muslim Americans are asked to grieve and defend themselves' by Roula Allouch

Muslim Americans are too often asked not only to grieve acts of violence, but to defend their humanity in the aftermath. In this powerful opinion piece, CRSJ Council Member Roula Allouch reflects on the tragic attack at the Islamic Center of San Diego, the dangers of normalized anti-Muslim hate, and the urgent need to reject dehumanization in all its forms.

The Japanese American National Museum & the Fight to Preserve Democracy
📅 Premiere: Thursday, May 28, 2026
🕰️ Time: 2:00 p.m. ET

Join Wendy Shiba and Ann Burroughs for a timely conversation on the role of the Japanese American National Museum in defending civil rights, preserving historical memory, and confronting modern threats to democracy. Reflecting on the legacy of Japanese American incarceration during World War II, the discussion explores how museums serve not only as cultural institutions, but as essential civic spaces where history, truth, and democratic values are protected.

The conversation examines JANM’s public stance against efforts to erase or whitewash history, the growing challenges facing museums and cultural institutions, and the importance of preserving collective memory in the face of rising authoritarianism, xenophobia, and attacks on civil rights. Panelists also discuss the museum’s Democracy Center, contemporary parallels to past injustices, and JANM’s ongoing work to foster civic engagement, dialogue, and solidarity across communities.

Today, ABA CRSJ commemorates the anniversary of Hall v. Florida, the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision that strengthened constitutional protections for people with intellectual disabilities facing the death penalty. The Court recognized that rigid IQ score cutoffs fail to reflect medical standards or human dignity, reinforcing that justice must be informed by science, fairness, and respect for individual rights.

As we reflect on this historic ruling, we continue the work of advancing equity, due process, and humane treatment within our legal system.

Join us for a timely and thought-provoking webinar examining the legal, constitutional, and moral stakes of the Apache Stronghold fight to protect Oak Flat (Chi’chil Bildagoteel), a sacred site central to Western Apache religious practice. This program will explore how federal Indian law, the First Amendment, and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act intersect—and where many argue Native American spiritual traditions have been treated differently than other faith communities under U.S. law.

Through the lens of the Supreme Court’s refusal to hear Apache Stronghold’s challenge, panelists will discuss sacred site protection, religious liberty, and the broader implications for Indigenous sovereignty, equal justice, and the future of Native religious freedom in America.

We are excited to announce that the ABA Section of Civil Rights and Social Justice is now accepting submissions for our inaugural film competition, "Lights, Camera, Justice!" 📽️

We are seeking powerful, thought-provoking short films that shed light on critical human rights and social justice issues. This engaging initiative invites high school juniors and seniors to use the power of media to express what civil rights mean to them today. The CRSJ Film Competition is a core component of our initiative to use creative media as a catalyst for social change, civic engagement, and creative expression, and underscores that media is not only a tool for youth voice, but is also a way to honor our past, challenge our present, and inspire future leaders by:

🎯 Elevating Marginalized Narratives: Give a platform to stories often overlooked in mainstream media.
🎯 Educating and Inspiring: Use compelling visuals to inform the public about pressing global and local human rights challenges.
🎯 Building Community: Connect filmmakers, activists, academics, and the public in a shared commitment to social justice.

Spread the Word! 📢
We ask that you share this opportunity widely with your networks, friends, family, local high schools, educators, youth programs, community organizations, student groups, and anyone who can help promote the competition. We can only make a real impact with your help.

All entries must be received by June 1, 2026, and winners will be notified by email by July 1, 2026. Full competition details, rules, deadlines, eligibility, and submission guidelines are available online.

Today, we honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness will never be forgotten.

This Memorial Day, we pause to reflect on the freedoms we enjoy because of those who gave everything in defense of them. We extend our deepest gratitude to our fallen heroes and their families. 🇺🇸
