Shoutout to our Summer 2026 JJI mentoring sessions, held in the parking lot of our Warwick office!

Mentors and mentees participated in games designed to help them get to know one another, strengthen relationships, and practice working as a team rather than individually. Our mentor group included members of the Rhode Island State Police as well as non-law-enforcement community mentors.

Bethanie from MADD Rhode Island (MADD) also visited to learn more about our programming and the youth we serve. During the fall season, representatives from the MADD Rhode Island Chapter will facilitate sessions for our youth participants focused on the dangers and consequences of drug-impaired and drunk driving.

MENTOR Rhode Island will be hosting another Elements of Effective Practice for Mentoring 5th Edition Training on Thursday, October 29th AND Thursday, November 12th from 9:30am-4:30pm In-person.

Christopher Margadonna, Our Master Trainer, will take participants through the processes needed to recruit mentors, achieve community buy-in, screen and train mentors, match volunteers and youth in meaningful and fulfilling mentoring relationships, and discuss issues facing youth today!

If you are hoping to start/restart a mentoring program at your organization this training is for you! Also, any new staff in your agency working as a mentor program coordinator, assisting the mentor program, or overseeing the program, we invite all to attend.

MENTOR’s quarterly Mentoring Research Roundup offers mentoring professionals a window into the world of mentoring and youth development research so that they can be informed about key new findings that can improve their work and important new trends that can strengthen the impact of mentoring relationships.

Each issue highlights a feature article illuminating new research, an interview with a leading scholar about their work, and summaries of hot-off-the-press research studies.

In issue 2, MENTOR explores culturally responsive mentoring through the work of Science Club, a STEM mentoring program serving young people in Chicago. Hear from Dr. Bernadette Sánchez and Dr. Michael Kennedy about what the research can teach us about building strong relationships, engaging young people in STEM, and creating more culturally responsive mentoring experiences in an interview you can watch as part of the Roundup.

JJI youth participated in field trips to Wright’s Dairy Farm and Providence Place Mall. These shared community experiences provide important opportunities for our youth and Rhode Island State Police mentors to engage with one another in positive, relaxed settings, free from preconceived notions or negative assumptions.

Through these activities, the youth and mentors learn from one another, build meaningful relationships, and begin breaking down walls created by years of misconceptions, biases, and false narratives.
