Sparky The Fire Dog reminds us to turn our clocks back one hour on Sunday, November 1.

This is a great time to test your 10-year battery-powered smoke alarms or replace the batteries in any that use regular batteries.

The Kansas Fire Marshal Task Force K9 hosted the annual Fall Ball at Crisis City near Salina, Kansas, on October 24th and 25th. Fall Ball is a fun event where K9 teams from task forces across the United States come to train together. These teams consisted of both live-find K9s and human remains detection teams.

This year, teams came from Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Colorado, Texas, Virginia, Vermont, and even Canada! We wouldn’t be successful without the hard work of our volunteers, including KSARDA (Kansas Search and Rescue Dog Association), Pottawatomie County EMS, Kansas Fire & Rescue Training Institute, Koster Shots (photography), and several individual volunteers who assisted in playing mock victims for the dogs!

The team, led by K9 coordinator Lillian Lockwood, worked hard over the last several months to set up this event and keep it running smoothly. Thank you to all the handlers who came out for an amazing weekend with even better weather!

Browsing through recent Facebook posts, I found this gem from Burlingame Fire Dist #6. Two Ways Out Challenge. Parents need to practice this with their children, and grandparents with their grandchildren.

Fires don't discriminate and can happen to any of us at any moment. Everyone in the family needs to know two ways out, even adult children. Once you are outside, resist the urge to go back inside.

🚪 TWO WAYS OUT CHALLENGE 🔥

Without getting up and looking around, can you name TWO ways out of the room you’re sitting in right now?

Comment ✅ if you could.

Knowing another way out can matter if your normal exit is blocked by smoke or fire.

Our friends at the Kansas Department of Health and Environment shared some important information on Carbon Monoxide (CO) Poisoning. Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month begins in November. The Kansas Fire Marshal, along with the National Carbon Monoxide Awareness Association, will be providing some up-to-date information during November to remind everyone of the dangers of CO poisoning.

🔴CARBON MONOXIDE (CO) IS INVISIBLE, ODORLESS, TASTELESS, AND CAN KILL IN MINUTES

🚨🚨WHEN A CARBON MONOXIDE ALARM SOUNDS ➡️ EXIT THE BUILDING TO FRESH AIR IMMEDIATELY ➡️ CALL 911 ➡️ STAY IN FRESH AIR UNTIL FIRST RESPONDERS DECLARE THE BUILDING IS SAFE TO RE-ENTER.

🔴 SYMPTOMS OF CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING include headaches, chest pain, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, weakness, confusion, and loss of consciousness.

🔴 CARBON MONOXIDE SOURCES INCLUDE:
Grills, camp stoves, furnaces, water heaters, fireplaces, wood stoves, gas ranges, non-electrical heaters, vehicles, boats, fuel-burning equipment, e.g., chainsaws.

🔴AVOID CARBON MONOXIDE EXPOSURE:
• After snowstorms, clear snow from dryer, furnace, stove, and fireplace vents.
• Keep generators outdoors, away from people, windows, doors, and vents.
• Never idle a vehicle inside a garage, even with the garage door open.
• Service fuel-burning appliances every year.
• Never use camp stoves, grills, or gas-burning tools indoors.
• Never use gas, kerosene, or propane heaters indoors.
• Never use a gas stove to heat your home.
• Keep vehicle exhaust pipes clear of snow.

🟡INSTALL CARBON MONOXIDE ALARMS IN YOUR HOME:
• On every floor.
• In every sleeping area.
• Near every fuel-burning appliance.
• At doors leading to attached garages.
• In every room over a garage.

🟡CARBON MONOXIDE ALARMS SHOULD:
• Have battery back-ups.
• Be tested regularly.
• Have batteries replaced annually.
• Interconnect so if one sounds, all sound, if possible.

🐶PETS are more vulnerable to CO than humans: Most CO alarms do not sound below 70 ppm - levels fatal to pets. Get CO alarms that are sensitive at lower levels. Watch pets for abnormal behavior.
