Tonight, Ranlo Fire and Rescue took part in a mutual aid training with multiple area departments at Gaston College.

During this training, Probationary Firefighter Trey Torres went through multiple scenarios taking part in searching for victims, forcible entry, and fire attack. On the last scenario, Firefighter Torres had to enter the building as part of a search team to locate Chief Lewis and Asst. Chief Myers who were waiting for him with his Black Helmet.

Trey is a very hard worker and proved tonight that he was ready to move forward as a checked off firefighter. It was only right to get a group picture with all the firefighters who helped him reach this extraordinary accomplishment tonight. In the picture are firefighters from Ranlo, Spencer Mountain, Dallas and Mount Holly.

In the second picture is Karen Creech, Ranlo Mayor Creech’s wife, who wanted to tag along to the training to see the kind of things firefighters experience during training and calls. Also pictured are Deputy Chief Jeff Hicks, Firefighter Trey Torres, Chief Todd Lewis, Asst. Chief Bryan Myers, and Firefighter Hunter Gosnell.

Thank you to everyone who took part in tonight’s training and made it such a special night for Firefighter Torres!

This morning at 2:37 am, we were dispatched to assist the Lowell Fire Department (FD) with a multi-vehicle collision (MVC) involving two tractor trailers on Interstate 85 Northbound (I-85 NB) at exit 23. Rescue 17 and Engine 43 arrived at the scene to find two tractor trailers heavily damaged, with one of them engulfed in flames. Shortly after Squad 19 and Car 19 arrived, crews began assisting with fire suppression efforts. Squad 19 also provided water to Rescue 17. Community FD and East Gaston FD also contributed to the water supply operation. The fire was brought under control at 3:05 am. Ladder 4 & Hazmat 4 were called to pump off the remaining fuel from the tractor. Tragically, the driver of the tractor that caught fire succumbed to his injuries. After a thorough investigation, Rescue 17 and Squad 19 extricated the victim from the truck. Squad 19 cleared the scene at 6:44 am.

On October 7, 2026, we conducted a fire prevention public safety class for the Brookside Elementary Kindergarten class. During the class, we taught the children essential fire safety measures such as the “stop, drop, and roll” technique and the importance of having a fire escape plan. We would like to express our gratitude to Brookside Elementary for their continued support and for allowing us to return to their school each year.

This morning at 8:58 am, we were dispatched to assist Dallas Fire Department (FD) with a motor vehicle collision with rescue at the intersection of Lower Dallas Highway and Old Spencer Mountain Road. Since Dallas Fire Department was participating in a training event, we were tasked with assisting in answering their calls. Rescue 18 and Squad 19 arrived to find two vehicles with moderate damage. Squad 19 assisted the emergency medical services (EMS) in removing multiple patient from the vehicles. We remained on the scene for a short duration before Squad 19 cleared the scene at 9:30 am.

We remember the firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, and ordinary citizens who ran toward danger.
We remember the courage.
We remember the sacrifice.
We remember what it looked like when a nation stood together.
25 years later, we still remember.
