Closing out the Dave Short Pumpkin Carving Contest with entries from many of from all over the city were judged by Fire Chief Lauren Johnson, Dave Short's Widow, and Kris Hamper-CEO Leatherman with the Duffy Roodenburg and the Logistics Section entry of "Moon Rising over the Tower" as the winning entry. The winning pumpkin was taken home to be properly displayed in one of the many corners of the Short residence that honors retired Chief Dave Short, keeping his Halloween and Portland Fire connection going. Keep your eyes peeled for next year's contest!

You can be a community hero like these 2 found in the Rose City Park Neighborhood of NE PDX by simply taking a rake out to a storm drain and uncovering the mat of deciduous leaves that cover them during the early rains of fall. These intersection lakes can lead to avoidable motor vehicle crashes or pedestrian falls. And with it being a night where the foot traffic is going to be off the charts so take a moment to get the water to drain as designed. This water removal will leave in service for a response need that is sure to arise and best serve you when you need us.

An overnight response from this week had addressing a vehicle that had gone off the roadway in SW PDX with both PPB and AMR on scene assisting in keeping the area safe for work operations and perform the required field medical evaluation for the occupants of the vehicle.

This serves as a good reminder that the seasons are changing, we will have less daylight, and the roads will possibly be slick due to regular precipitation. Take the time to leave early and drive accordingly given the lower light and weather conditions.

Our non-sworn members don't only shine on game shows but also in the local volleyball scene as well. Amanda Wiedeman (Administrative Specialist II) makes certain all our portable technology is working properly keeping us connected at all times as we are on the go. Mobile phones, tablets, and many other devices are essential in the operation of Portland Fire & Rescue and Amanda is charged with keeping us connected so as respond to your emergencies, we are all able to communicate as needed off of the radio channels thanks to Amanda.

When Amanda leaves work, she is often on her way to coach a volleyball practice with either Sunset High School or local volleyball club Aspire NW (where she has coached children of our sworn members). In her second year at Sunset High, she guided the Apollos to an overall Record 18-13, with 4 athletes receiving All Metro League Honors. Most impressive of all was being recognized as the 2026 Metro League Coach of the Year.

The Apollos are on a state playoff run having upset St. Mary's last week and are taking on perennial powerhouse Central Catholic in their house tomorrow at 1PM. Regardless of the outcome of tomorrow's match, the athletes under Amanda's guidance will be ready to encounter any future challenges as her passion for growing female athletes by building confidence, teamwork, and discipline through sport will serve them throughout their lives. These are all helpful qualities for anyone interested in the career of firefighter, so Amanda is helping PF&R while at her office job and her coaching job!

Congratulations on being selected as the Metro League Coach of the Year - 2026 and best of luck tomorrow, Amanda! You're another example of "we have good people".

It's not only carving pumpkins for to get into the Halloween Spirit. Station 29 located out in the SE Portland Pleasant Valley Neighborhood rolling calls all month long with a Trick-or-Treat themed skull leading the way!

Congratulations to Duffy Roodenburg on his pumpkin being selected as the champion entry for the Dave Short Pumpkin Carving Contest. You can see he modeled his entry after the training tower located in the center of the Logistics - Fire Marshal's Office - Station 23 Campus located in SE PDX. His pumpkin narrowly beat out a few of the other entries and for his efforts he was awarded with an engraved Leatherman Trac knife signifying his winning pumpkin for 2026 in the Dave Short Pumpkin Carving Contest.

Duffy is the primary carpenter for Portland Fire & Rescue and uses his skills to perform a myriad of tasks that help in countless ways. And you can see his attention to detail transferred from his woodworking to his pumpkin carving.

Thanks to Leatherman for their support of the Dave Short Pumpkin Carving Contest this year and providing the winning knife and the runner up prize of a Raptor, collapsable trauma shears.

assigned to B - Shift in Recruit Class 26-02 successfully completed their performance evaluations for the Training Station Captain and Training Staff yesterday and were awarded by walking down the aerial ladder to pluck their helmets off of the motivation wall and enjoyed the rest of the shift. These moments will be remembered by the members for the remainder of their career!

Congratulations to FF Anderson, FF Boster, and FF Monari on successfully completing the academy and work at the training station to receive your ticket into any other Portland Fire Station in the city. We look forward to working alongside you soon!

Our last entry into the Dave Short Pumpkin Carving Contest is from Station 13 out of the Lloyd District. Known as "The Show" assigned there incorporated their station logo along with including the station spirit animal, Kevin the Goldfish.

Station 13 is located in inner NE Portland with an engine and truck serving those in the Lloyd District and many other surrounding neighborhoods. The multitude of locations served by the station include the large event spaces of the Oregon Convention Center and the Moda Center, a wide variety of residential occupancies including large single-family homes, multi occupancy apartment complexes and high-rise senior living facilities. The members of the station are very connected and there are many traditions that surround Station 13 including hunting and fishing outings, summer campouts, and their annual cookie decorating party during the December holiday season.

Another multi-pumpkin entry into the Dave Short Pumpkin Carving Contest from SE PDX Station 25 was this anglerfish. Using 3 pumpkins and bulb of garlic, assigned to the Lion's Den found the time to craft an incredibly creative entry that is only benefitted by the inserted background shared with by the team of carvers. The decorative pumpkins used in the teeth and spinal fins took a quick beating in the weather and wilted almost immediately. Fortunately, we have these images to use in the judging which will occur tomorrow.

Engine and Truck 25 located in the Woodstock Neighborhood are well connected to those they serve attending safety meetings, holiday gatherings, and many summer block parties.
