🗓️ The next lead testing event is at David Douglas High School on May 30th from 11:00AM-2:00PM! Bring your soil, pottery, spices, and toys for FREE lead screening by a Lead Prevention specialist.

🍄 Watch how to prepare a soil sample from around your home or garden.

🌱 Plan ahead! From around the base of your home, dig soil 1-2 inches deep, for the garden dig 6-8 inches deep. Collect about a cup of soil each from these areas into ziploc bags labeled with their location. If soil is damp from rain, dry it indoors a few days before for best results. Do not use a flame or hairdryer to dry.

⬆️ Have you noticed more ticks lately? You're not alone—reports have been increasing over the last ten years, particularly around Powell Butte Park. Fortunately, tick-borne diseases are extremely rare in the Pacific Northwest.

🌲If you're planning some time outside, keep an eye out in wooded areas and grassy properties leading into woods. Ticks in our area tend to wait in knee-high vegetation to latch on to an unsuspecting dog or human. Ticks are most active during spring and summer months but can be found all year.

✅ Once a tick bites, it can be difficult to remove, so it's important to do a quick check after your hike. If you're heading out during tick season, here are a few easy ways to keep them away:

👖Try to wear long sleeves and pants to cover up.
🧦Tuck your shirt into your pants and your pants into your socks
🦵Use a repellent with DEET, picaridin, or use a lemon & eucalyptus oil repellent on your boots and legs.
👣 Stick to the main trails and avoid tall grass when you can.
🦌It's also best to avoid narrow animal paths, like deer trails.

Today is also National Don’t Fry Day! Let’s talk skin safety!

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. There are more cases diagnosed each year than breast, colon, lung, and prostate cancer COMBINED.

The good news is 90% of skin cancers are preventable!

⚠️ Never intentionally tan
🧴Apply sunscreen daily
👒 Wear sun protective clothing
🏖️ Seek shade, especially between 10 AM - 4 PM

🌡️ It doesn’t have to be that hot for heat illness to strike! Hot weather can affect you more when it is humid, early in the summer when you aren’t used to heat, or when it stays warm overnight and you don’t have as much of a chance to cool off.

Heat illness can be especially common at events and outdoor activities in the summer. Festivals, street fairs, community gatherings, and even backyard hangouts are important for mental health and community wellness, but stay safe! Make sure to:

🥤 Drink water
🌳 Take breaks in the shade
🧴 Wear sunscreen
🍹 Moderate alcohol, caffeine, and any other substances

Stay cool while having fun, even on days that aren’t that hot ☀️
