Armand Bayou Nature Center
Visit this astonishingly beautiful part of the Texas Gulf Coast ABNC is one of the largest urban wilderness preserves in the U.S.
(314)

The mission of Armand Bayou Nature Center (ABNC) is twofold:

To preserve the wetlands prairie, forest and marsh habitats with which we have been entrusted. To provide opportunities for people to experience the Armand Bayou habitats and the importance of preserving these vanishing habitats. Through preservation and education, ABNC strives to "Reconnect People with Nature". ABNC contains 2500 acres of the natural wetlands forest, prairie and marsh habitats once abundant in the Houston/Galveston area. ABNC is home to over 370 species of birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians. ABNC offers hiking trails, exhibits, field trips, Scout programs, birding, a historic farm and fun for all.

The Real Lives of ABNC Wildlife: Nighttime Raccoon Drama! 🦝💥

While our bobcats prowl in total silence, our nocturnal raccoons bring the action! Our motion-activated trail cameras captured this late-night scuffle between two raccoons settling a dispute under the cover of darkness.

Raccoons are highly intelligent and social creatures, but they are also fiercely protective of their space and resources. Whether squabbling over choice foraging spots, territory, or social hierarchy, these night owl encounters are a completely natural part of life in the wild.

By monitoring nocturnal behaviors across over 4,000 acres, our conservation team gains valuable insight into how our native species interact within this protected habitat.

📍 Location: Armand Bayou Nature Center 📸 Tool of the Trade: Motion-activated wildlife cameras 🌿 Mission: Preserve. Protect. Connect.

Big welcomes come in tiny packages! 🐊

Next time you step into ABNC’s Admissions Office, listen closely… you might hear plenty of squeaks, chirps, and the occasional wobbly splash. We’re hosting a few baby alligator greeters while they grow, gain strength, and get ready for the big wild world.

They’ll be making themselves right at home with us for the next year until they’re big enough for release into their natural habitat. Drop in, say hello, and watch them grow!

We are giving a huge shoutout to our incredible, dedicated volunteers! 💚
Together, we planted 2,000 prairie plants at our annual Prairie Pandemonium planting event!

Your hard work directly restores native prairie habitats and advances conservation of our imperiled Coastal tallgrass ecosystem. 🌱

Additionally, we want to share our deepest gratitude with our generous partners, H-E-B , Bay Area Meat Market & Deli , Wild Birds Unlimited, and Makenzie Layne Boutique for helping make this event possible. Thank you for supporting us and being an essential part of the greater cause of conservation! 🌾

Snapped this little gardener hard at work today! 🌿 Apparently, burrowing into the flowerpots and playing in the dirt is crucial to the creative process. 🌻

Inspired by our cute furry neighbors? Come paint them with us at our Pumpkins & Opossums Paint-by-Nature class on Saturday, October 31st! 🎃

Grab your spot before this tiny master artist takes them all! Register at ABNC.org/paint-by-nature 🎨

Crisp fall air, sunny skies, and spooky mud spirits watching over the boardwalk... autumn has officially arrived at ABNC! 🍂

Huge shout-out to one of our incredible volunteers for crafting these hidden tree spirits along the Discovery Loop to get our trails ready for tonight’s Creepy Crawlers.👻

Come soak up this amazing weather on the trails today and see if you can spot the tree spirits along the way! 🌳👁️

This , we’re reflecting on what makes our nature preserve and community so special! 💚

In just three weeks, families will gather at ABNC for our annual Fall Festival to connect with nature. Events like this take a village, and they are only possible through the dedicated support of our amazing volunteers and event sponsors.

We are incredibly grateful for your partnership, not only in powering one of our favorite community traditions, but also in safeguarding 4,337 acres of imperiled Gulf Coast habitats and supporting environmental education for all ages.

Thank you for partnering with Armand Bayou Nature Center! 🌾PEMEX Deer Park OxyChem, San Jacinto College, and SSCI.

Did you know the blue-tongued skink is one of nature’s greatest bluffers? 🦎💙

In the wild, bright colors usually indicate toxicity to predators, but this deceptive reptile is playing a brilliant trick.

When threatened, the skink flashes its vivid blue tongue to trick predators into thinking it's poisonous. In reality? It doesn't have a single drop of venom or poison- it’s relying entirely on the predator's better judgment!

If its famous bluff fails, it backs it up with tough, scaly armor, a detachable tail, the ability to puff up to look bigger, and a surprisingly powerful bite.

Nature's ultimate game of high-stakes poker! 🃏

A big thank you to TotalEnergies on this for coming out, getting their hands dirty, and supporting the conservation mission of ABNC! 🌿

Their team spent the day collecting native seeds to plant along our levees and site roads: a vital step in diversifying our plant life and enhancing local habitat. We couldn't do all that we do without the help of our dedicated partners! 💚
