It’s Halloween weekend! With excited trick-or-treaters, busy sidewalks and increased traffic after dark, our streets can be especially crowded. Before you head out, review these safety tips from the National Safety Council:

🎃 Watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs
🎃 Enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully
🎃 At twilight and later in the evening, watch for children in dark clothing
🎃 Discourage new, inexperienced drivers from driving on Halloween

Be safe out there!

Today we pause to remember Dale Eidsvig, who died in the line of duty on this day in 1972.

Dale, who was a veteran of the United States Navy and Minnesota National Guard, started working for Hennepin County General Hospital in the late 1960s. He had many passions in life, including Minnesota professional and collegiate sports, and bowling.

Dale wore a warm smile on his face and touched the lives of many, and we wish peace and love to all that remember him.

Today, on National First Responders Day, we honor our EMTs, paramedics, dispatchers and fellow emergency professionals who answer the call when their communities need them most. Whether responding to emergencies, providing lifesaving care or supporting those in crisis, their work makes a difference every day.

Today, and every day, we thank all first responders for their service and dedication.

More than half of calls to poison centers involve children under the age of six, and often from incidents where they have been exposed to poisonous items in their own home. Here are some safety tips to help keep your family safe:

· Keep poisonous products up high and out of sight. Remember that child-resistant caps are not child-proof.
· Teach children to ask before tasting, eating, or drinking anything. Items such as cleaners and medicine can look like food, drinks or candy.
· Avoid using medicines in front of children when possible, and do not call medicine “candy." Children may copy what parents or grandparents do, such as taking medication.

The Minnesota Regional Poison Center is hosted by Hennepin Healthcare. If you have a poison emergency or question, call Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222. Experts are available 24/7.

Our new academy class is all smiles after a day of learning! This group, and a few more individuals not pictured, are expanding our paramedic team. We're excited to support them on their journey over the next six months, which includes both classroom learning and ride-along training, culminating with their badge pinning ceremony. We can't wait to celebrate their achievements in the months ahead!
