The Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce's Centurions Leadership Program spends two years explorin

Since 1976, Centurions Leadership Program has earned its reputation as an unequaled training ground for future Kansas City leaders. Today, the two-year program has more than 80 active Centurions who join more than 2,000 alumni. We are a close-knit group of women and men from diverse backgrounds, expanding our personal and professional networks within the group and throughout the community we serve.

In celebration of the Centurions Leadership Program’s 50th anniversary, Centurions are giving back to the community through a Legacy project supporting Spring Valley Park and the restoration of the Bernard Powell Memorial Fountain and Plaza. Bernard Powell, a 1978 Centurions graduate, was a Kansas City civil rights leader who championed youth leadership, neighborhood revitalization, and community empowerment. This project honors his enduring legacy while helping preserve an important piece of Kansas City history for future generations.

Our Centurions Legacy Project has officially reached 288 volunteer hours served with Uplift! 🎉

It has been incredible watching everyone continue to show up, contribute their time, and work together in service to our community.

These 288 hours represent so much more than a number — they represent people choosing to invest in Kansas City and in the organizations doing important work here every day.

📣 UPCOMING CENTURIONS EVENT | RE-ENTRY SIMULATION

What does it take to successfully rebuild your life after incarceration?

Join the Centurions Welcoming & Belonging Committee for an interactive Re-Entry Simulation designed to build empathy, awareness, and understanding of the challenges individuals face when returning to their communities.

Through this immersive experience, participants will gain a firsthand perspective on the barriers to securing employment, housing, transportation, and essential resources.

One of the best parts of being a Centurion is the opportunity to go behind the scenes, not only in Kansas City, but in peer and aspirational cities, to understand what makes communities thrive.

The Pinnacle cohort spent a packed few days in Chicago exploring the people, places, history, and ideas that have shaped the city. From Wrigley Field and historic architecture to time spent walking its neighborhoods, each experience offered a new perspective to bring home to Kansas City.

But the biggest takeaway wasn’t about a place. It was about how we show up as leaders.

Dr. Tresa Dunbar Garrett challenged us to set aside our assumptions, take the time to understand a community’s story, and lead with purpose through listening and relationships.

Her words captured what this experience, and Centurions, is all about:

“We lead with curiosity. We look for evidence. We work alongside the community.”

Through their stories, these leaders remind us of the importance of honoring our heritage, embracing our identities, and recognizing the diverse experiences that strengthen our communities.

Centurions Spotlight: Ashton Wells

Ashton Wells serves as Major Gifts Officer at MOCSA and is our Benchmarking Trip Committee Co-Chair for the Pinnacle class.

For Ashton, leadership starts with one simple principle: show up. Whether it's supporting others through life's big moments, lending a hand when someone needs it, or investing in the community, she believes showing up builds the trust and relationships that make strong leaders and stronger communities.

One of Ashton's favorite Kansas City moments is arriving home at the airport after a trip and seeing fellow travelers proudly wearing KC gear – a reminder of the unmatched pride and connection people have to this city. That same sense of community motivates her to give back and help Kansas City continue to thrive. Outside of work, Ashton enjoys cheering on Kansas City sports teams, spending time with friends on a patio, exploring the outdoors with her dog, and traveling to experience new cultures and perspectives.
