Kansas City's most celebrated destination for civic, entertainment and cultural activities, with over 100 years of iconic history and year-round attractions for all ages. All of these phrases and more are regularly used to describe Union Station. Visitors of all ages, from all places and for all reasons tie Union Station to special and magical moments from their lives. Union Station draws tourists from all over the world who marvel at her Grand Hall's 95-foot ceiling, three 3,500-pound chandeliers and the six-foot wide clock hanging in her central arch. She wakes up early and stays up late to host business meetings, civic events, weddings and celebrations of all sorts. Just as you could 100 years ago, you can still catch the train at Union Station's AMTRAK stop and head out across the country. You'll also find traveling exhibits produced by the Smithsonian, National Geographic and other international organizations, a Planetarium, an interactive science center Science City, and a vibrant Theater District featuring the region's biggest movie screen, live theatre, and so much more. The Station is also home to two of KC's finest restaurants, Harvey's and Pierponts, as well as Parisi Artisan Coffee, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, Rally House, and the Science City Store. It was 112 years ago today that Kansas City came together to celebrate the grand opening of its magnificent new Union Station.

The completed station cost nearly $6 million to build and was part of a massive $50 million investment by the Kansas City Terminal Railroad that also included new tracks, switching towers, viaducts, and bridges.

When completed, Union Station boasted 850,000 square feet of space and 900 rooms, making it the third-largest train station in the country, behind only Grand Central Terminal and Pennsylvania Station in New York City.

Union Station opened to the public on October 30, 1914. And at just after midnight on the morning of November 1, 1914, the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Flyer became the first train to arrive at the newly opened station.

Sensory Sunday returns to Science City on Sunday, November 15, presented by Building Hope for Autism!

Join us for this special sensory-friendly Science City experience before public opening.

Science City’s Sensory Sunday takes place from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

This experience is designed to provide a welcoming environment for guests on the autism spectrum and those with sensory sensitivities. Sound effects are turned off, lighting effects are minimized, sensory-friendly activities are available, and designated quiet areas are provided.

Beginning at 11:30 a.m., our staff will gradually turn on Science City’s regular sound and lighting effects and attractions in preparation for public opening at noon.

Sensory Sunday guests are welcome to stay and enjoy Science City throughout the day until closing at 5 p.m.
