Some people are just easy to root for. Shaun Stallworth is one of them.

Originally from the New Orleans area, Shaun came to Kansas City to attend University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law and has built a career around advocating for people who have been wronged.

After several years representing large companies on the defense side, Shaun made the move to representing individuals — bringing the valuable perspective he gained from his years on the other side of the courtroom and a whole lot of dedication to his clients at Holman Schiavone, LLC.

That commitment to advocacy has led to some meaningful work. Most recently, Shaun represented a plaintiff in a 2025 employment discrimination case against Children’s Mercy Hospital that resulted in a jury verdict for the plaintiff.

But what we love most about Shaun isn’t just what he does as an attorney. He’s genuinely one of those people who makes the legal community better by being part of it. He’s kind, generous with his time and passionate about helping others — whether that means advocating for a client, mentoring future lawyers or giving back to the profession.

While at UMKC, Shaun helped create a scholarship for students of color and later served as president of the County Bar Association. He’s also been recognized with the KCMBA Distinguished Counselor Award in 2020, which honors professionalism, collegiality, courtesy, character and friendship—and honestly, we can’t think of a better description.

Shaun, we’re so glad you’re part of KCMBA. Thank you for everything you do for your clients, your colleagues and our legal community. 💙

Where do we even start with Athena?

As a partner and Personal Injury and Employment Discrimination attorney at Siro Smith Dickson, PC , Athena Dickson has built her career around helping people feel heard and supported while remaining calm, thoughtful and incredibly powerful.

Her philosophy is simple: take the time to listen and make the legal process a little less intimidating for her clients.

Athena has been involved in some big cases. Notably, in 2020, she helped secure a $4.9 million federal jury verdict for a former Zona Rosa general manager who was fired after refusing to participate in diverting charitable parking-meter funds.

She’s also given so much of her time and energy to our legal community. Athena served as KCMBA President in 2020 and now serves as the 2025–2026 President of Missouri Bar. Wow.

She’s also a KCMBF board member and stays deeply involved in mentoring and pipeline programs through Lawyers Encouraging Academic Performance (LEAP) and our Student Law Academy program. Her leadership and dedication have earned her numerous honors, including the 2024 KCMBA Distinguished Counselor Award, the Women’s Justice Awards Mentor Award, and recognition among the Top 50 Women Lawyers in Missouri and Kansas.

What can’t she do? We are yet to figure that out. 😉 We’re just lucky to have a front-row seat to all that she does. 💙

Wes Shumate. Enough said.

Wes is a personal injury lawyer and partner at Davis Bethune & Jones, LLC, where he represents people who have been wronged or seriously injured — from vehicle and train crashes to defective products, insurance disputes, and sexual abuse and assault cases. He’s a fierce advocate for his clients.

Earlier this year, Wes teamed up with attorneys Brette Hart and Matt Greenburg for a trial in Clay County on behalf of a client mistreated by a large insurance company. The team secured a $21.5 million verdict for bad-faith failure to settle and defend.

Wes gives back to our legal community, not only taking on pro bono cases, but he also serves on the KCMBF Board, where he takes a particular interest in our Student Law Academy program and the next generation of legal professionals.

Wes has said that the best professional advice he’s received is: “Strive to follow the KCMBA Principles of Civility in practice.”

Wow.

We’re grateful for the way he shows up — for his clients, for future lawyers, and for KCMBA and KCMBF. Thank you for being such a class act, Wes, and for being an amazing part of our legal community. We’re lucky to have you as a KCMBA member! 💙

Everything is better when Meghan is around — and things definitely get done. 💙

From prosecuting cases to defending clients, Meghan Litecky knows how to think on her feet. Her time as a prosecutor taught her to make critical decisions under pressure — a skill she now brings to her work as a civil litigator and shareholder at Dysart Taylor McMonigle Brumitt & Wilcox, P.C.

Meghan represents individuals and businesses in a wide range of matters, from wrongful death cases involving trucking companies to professional liability claims and personal and property damage matters. She also successfully defended clients against an $8.5 million claim involving alleged breach of loyalty and tortious interference.

And she’s just as committed to the legal community. Meghan serves on both the KCMBA and KCMBF Boards of Directors, helps fundraise for our Foundation, is a Trial Advocacy Adjunct Professor at University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law, and helps lead the Association for Women Lawyers of Greater Kansas City Trial Institute. No big deal.

Meghan, thank you for all you do for your clients, your colleagues, and not only our legal community, but the Kansas City community as a whole.

Meet David! If you know David, you know how genuinely sweet and kind he is. He treats everyone with respect, takes the time to listen, and brings a level of compassion to his work that is impossible to miss.

As part of Shook’s Pro Bono Team, David handles juvenile cases, adult criminal matters and related civil matters. Before joining Shook, he spent 19 years as an assistant public defender in Jackson and Cass Counties, representing indigent clients in nearly 10,000 cases—from traffic offenses to murder charges.

Throughout his career, David has tried many cases, securing acquittals in first-degree murder, burglary, drug sales and other serious cases. He has also successfully handled numerous suppression, dismissal and probation discharge motions.

But his impact extends far beyond the courtroom. David has served in several leadership roles, regularly supervised attorneys, and trained and mentored more than 65 lawyers throughout his career. He has also presented at legal conferences and served as a guest lecturer at the UMKC Public Defender Clinic.

We're grateful to have members like David. Thank you, David, for all you do for the Kansas City legal community!
