Commission Actions – June 15, 2026

New Business:

1. Commission approves petition to vacate the spur off Harbor Loop, (Dogwood Circle), District 1.

2. Commission approves scheduling FY Budget Work Session #1 on Thursday, July 23, 2026 at 9:30 a.m. in the Commission Board Room.

3. Commission approves request to increase mail fee from $2.00 to $3.58 to adjust for increased postage rates.

- Probate Judge Lee Tucker stated that the cost of mail is going up as the new metal car tags are being issued. The increase will be in effect for the January 2026 mailout. Judge Tucker said he hoped rates would go back down since this only occurs every four years. Increase in rates applies only to those who want their car tags mailed.

4. Commission approves $1,000,000.00 general obligation warrant for FY2026 road projects approved during the Commission’s May 4, 2026 regular meeting.

5. Commission approves hiring of Mr. Brandon Kelly in the full-time position of driver/operator within the Solid Waste Department with effective start date of June 17, 2026, conditioned upon Mr. Kelly’s satisfactory completion of drug screening and hiring paperwork.

Notes: FY Department Budgets are due July 14, per County Administrator Amy Frederickson. The next meeting of the Walker County Commission will be held on July 6 in the Commission Board Room. As stated above, the budget work session will be held on Thursday, July 23.

Kansas is a small but historic community located in west Walker County, District 2. Incorporated in 1956, Kansas boasts a post office that has been in operation since 1855 and Veterans Memorial Park, established in 2008. The park has a baseball field, walking track, playground, performing stage, and monument that pays tribute to those from the town of Kansas who have died in wars. Just recently, a 3.5-mile stretch of paving on old Highway 78, running right through the heart of Kansas, was completed. Also pictured is the community storm shelter and Kansas Methodist Church.

Parrish Municipal Park, located in District 3, boasts several amenities for all ages to enjoy. The park includes a splash pad, playground, shaded pavilion, baseball fields, and a basketball court.

Commission Actions – June 2, 2026 Meeting

New Business

1. Commission approves GovDeals Sale of Properties located at Euclid Avenue & East 24th Street, Jasper, Alabama; Parcel ID 64-17-05-16-1-105-011.000 and 64-17-05-16-1-105.016.000.

- Sales of $9,100 & $40,000 respectively.

2. Commission approves 5311 Grant Application – Transportation FY2027

- Yearly budget for fiscal year 2027; grant will provide a portion of the transportation budget and will apply to administration costs as well.
- WCCAA Executive Director Diedre Tatum said the agency needs to purchase a replacement van, which necessitated an uptick in budget.

3. Commission approves PayBuddy Proposal for Credit Card Provisioning Service at Landfill.

- Will help eliminate error in typing in credit card information. Works directly with terminal reader.
- $169 annual fee for merchant services and 1-time terminal cost for $300 will also apply.

4. Commission approves hiring of Jacob Buchanen as Full-Time Common Laborer in Road & Bridge Department, with anticipated start date of June 3, 2026, conditioned upon his satisfactory completion of hiring paperwork and WCCSB Drug Test.

- Fills vacant position

NOTE: This was a regular meeting of the Walker County Commission, not a special called meeting. The meeting was moved to Tuesday due to the observance of a state holiday.

The next regular meeting of the Walker County Commission will be held on Monday, June 15 in the Commission Board Room.
