Which gets your vote, snakes or bats? Let us know in the comments!

Snakes brumate; they have a lower metabalism and sleep more, but will wake up, move, and drink on warmer days. Some snakes brumate in groups.

Bats are one of the few animals that truly hibernate - long periods of torpor or lowered metabolism, low heart rate, deep sleep. If they are not hibernating, many bats migrate to warmer areas and return when weather gets warmer.

Both snakes and bats have a creepy reputatation but both snakes and bats are increadibly important for pest and insect control.

We’re pleased to announce that PEEC has been awarded an Open Outdoors for Kids grant from the National Park Foundation (NPF), the official nonprofit partner of the National Park Service (NPS).

Through this grant, PEEC and the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area staff plan to engage 4,000 elementary school students across New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

PEEC Into the Classroom is coming to libraries across Lackawanna County this fall! Families can enjoy hands-on environmental education programs right at their local library. Be sure to check your library’s calendar for upcoming program dates and times throughout the season.

This year marks 15 years of PEEC participating in Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program as an Educational Improvement Organization (EIO)!

We’re on track to reach 1,133 students across Pike, Monroe, and Wayne Counties this year through STEM education programs and hands-on learning experiences. A huge thank you to our 2025-2026 EITC partners , , , , and for their generous support that makes these educational opportunities possible!
