This schedule is weather dependent and subject to change. If in doubt about the source of smoke or fire, call 9-1-1 or 877-WARN-DEP (877-927-6337).

ABOUT PRESCRIBED FIRE
There are multiple benefits to prescribed fire, which is a safe, effective and efficient means of managing the buildup of forest fuels that may contribute to the start and spread of a wildfire. By actively eliminating sources of fuel that exacerbate forest fire risks through a prescribed fire program, the Forest Fire Service reduces risk to New Jersey residents, visitors and the environment.

Prescribed fire improves habitat for plants and animals, reduce the presence of damaging insects and ticks, and recycle nutrients into the soil. In addition, prescribed fire is an important part of the state’s carbon defense strategy. Allowing experts to choose the intensity, timing and interval of fire across the landscape may help prevent a larger uncontrolled wildfire, which would contribute to significant carbon loss. Typically, the implementation of most prescribed fire take place between February and early April.

Today marks the beginning of fire season here in NJ! March 15 is recognized as the start of spring fire season, as temperatures begin to rise and relative humidity begins to drop. With those two factors and potential increased wind activity (in like a lion, out like a lamb), fires can exhibit a rapid spread through last year's vegetation that is dried and cured.

If you happen to see any smoke or fire in the woods, contact 911 immediately. It's everyone's job to report dangerous wildfires!

Currently burning is banned due to the Red Flag Warning yesterday and wind event yesterday into today. Yesterday brought numerous brush fires throughout the state, including Section A3, where we are based. Please continue to police your fireplace and woodstove ashes, and obtain a fire permit before having a recreational campfire when they are allowed to commence again.

Be safe and enjoy the improving weather!

⚠️ Elevated Risk for the Spread of Wildfires - Tuesday, Nov. 12

US National Weather Service Philadelphia/Mount Holly and US National Weather Service New York NY have issued a Special Weather Statement for the elevated risk for the spread of wildfires throughout New Jersey today.

❗️SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT:
There is an increased risk for fire spread through early this evening in the wake of a cold front. Northwest winds will range from 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30-35 mph possible. In the afternoon, minimum relative humidity values are expected to fall into the 30-40% range. Due to the combination of gusty winds and marginal relative humidity values, these conditions could support the rapid spread of any fires that ignite, which could quickly become difficult to control.

Additionally, Stage 3 Fire Restrictions are in effect statewide.

STAGE 3 FIRE RESTRICTIONS
🚫🔥 All fires will be prohibited unless contained in an elevated stove using only propane, natural gas, gas, or electricity.
🚫🔥 No charcoal fires are allowed.
