Fossil Butte National Monument was established in southwestern Wyoming on October 23, 1972, in order to protect billions of fish, insect, plant, reptile, bird, and mammal fossils from the ancient Eeocene time period (56 to 34 million years ago). Wyoming looked much different than it does today, with a warm, humid, subtropical climate like what is found in the Florida Everglades today. Twenty-seven fish species have been identified from Fossil Lake, and the State Museum has several examples of these fish fossils, including Diplomystus Dentatus, Knightia eocaena, and Priscacara seen here.

Did you know that when the Wyoming State Museum was established in 1895, its first home was inside the Capitol? Among its earliest exhibits were displays of Wyoming’s agriculture, minerals, and fossils!

The museum moved out of the Capitol in 1937 and into the basement of the Wyoming Supreme Court building. In 1951, it moved to its current location in the Barrett Building, but you can still discover some fossils in the Capitol today.

Look closely at the Capitol’s black floor tiles and you might spot an ammonite fossil. These extinct, shelled marine creatures were relatives of modern octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish. The black, fossil-bearing stone was quarried in Tennessee and brought to Wyoming for the Capitol’s floors.

So next time you’re exploring the Capitol, don’t forget to look down. A little prehistoric history might be right beneath your feet!
