Jackson Hole artist Kathryn Mapes Turner explores a lifelong connection to the landscapes and wildlife that shaped her in The Land That Raised Me, opening Sept. 8 at Turner Fine Art.

Raised on her family’s century-old Triangle X Ranch in Grand Teton National Park, Kathryn draws on more than 30 years of painting and a lifetime spent observing the natural world. The exhibition brings together her newest paintings of the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem, exploring ideas of memory, belonging, wonder and the relationship between people and the natural world.

The Land That Raised Me is on view Sept. 8–30 at Turner Fine Art, 545 N. Cache St. in Jackson. An artist reception will be held Friday, Sept. 11 from 5–8 p.m. as part of the Palettes and Palates gallery tour. The reception is free and open to all.

Celebrate Wyoming Archaeology Awareness Month with an evening exploring the connections between archaeology, art and Wyoming history.

The Wyoming State Historic Preservation Office and Governor Mark Gordon will host a special event at the Wyoming Capitol on Friday, Sept. 25, featuring a lecture by Dr. William Taylor exploring horses in the archaeological record, along with hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction benefiting the 2027 Wyoming Archaeology Awareness Month poster program.

Among the auction items will be the framed original “Hoofbeats as Heartbeats” by Wyoming artist Robert Martinez. Commissioned through the Governor’s Semiquincentennial Grant program for the 2026 Archaeology Awareness Month poster, the work explores the relationship between Plains Tribes and the horse in Wyoming through an archaeological lens.

Grant writers and organizations looking to strengthen their grant-seeking skills can take part in a two-day Grant Writing USA training in Cheyenne, Oct. 22–23.

Presented in partnership with Laramie County, the workshop will cover developing government grant proposals and finding available funding opportunities. Beginning and experienced grant writers from nonprofits, government agencies, K–12 schools, colleges and universities are encouraged to attend.

Registration is $525 and includes two days of instruction, a Grant Writing USA workbook and lifetime access to its Alumni Resource Center. Discounts are available for nonprofits, alumni and groups of five or more.

University of Wyoming sculpture professor Ashley Hope Carlisle has been selected for a major public art commission at the Denver Botanic Gardens.

Ashley, a faculty member in University of Wyoming Department of Visual Arts, was one of four artists selected from 1,600 applicants nationwide following a year-long selection process. Her permanent installation, “Small Wonders: Seeds of Transformation,” is expected to be completed and installed by April 2028.

The project also connects directly to Ashley’s work with UW students, including the Master Craftsman paid apprenticeship program she developed to provide students and graduates with hands-on experience in large-scale fabrication and professional commissioned projects.

Congratulations to Ashley on this national recognition and exciting opportunity to bring the work of a Wyoming artist and educator to a major public garden!

Museums and cultural organizations looking to make their spaces and programs more accessible can join the next Museum Minds virtual conversation on Sept. 9.

Jen Sabo, executive director of Arts4All Florida, will lead a practical discussion about accessibility, including where organizations can start when they don't have an accessibility or ADA professional on staff. The conversation will also explore challenges facing historic buildings, visual exhibitions, outdoor spaces and other environments where accessibility may require creative solutions.

Participants can submit their own accessibility questions in advance for the live discussion.

Poetry Out Loud is back for the 2026–27 school year, and the new anthology is now available!

The Wyoming Arts Council invites high school teachers, students and community organizations across the state to participate in Poetry Out Loud, a free national poetry recitation program for students in grades 9–12.

Through Poetry Out Loud, students explore poetry from a diverse collection of poets, choose works that speak to them and bring those poems to life through recitation. Along the way, they build confidence, strengthen public speaking skills and develop a deeper connection to poetry.

Powell Creative Corner returns Friday, Sept. 11, for an evening celebrating local creativity at Gestalt Studio Café in Powell.

This free, all-ages monthly open mic and art showcase welcomes music, poetry, storytelling, visual art, comedy and more. Community members can take the stage, display and sell their artwork, or simply stop by to enjoy the performances and shop work from local artists and makers.

First-time and experienced performers are welcome. Advance registration is encouraged for performers and displaying artists to guarantee a spot, with walk-ins accommodated as time allows.
