Recently, IEC analysts headed to Brooklyn Navy Yard to collect wash water from vessels removed from the New York Harbor for cleaning in order to determine whether this water carries pollutants that may run off into nearby waterways. To prevent sample contamination, analysts held out sample collection bottles directly beneath the wash stream before it hit the ground. It was a new perspective for our team to collect samples from underneath a boat rather than aboard it!💧🛥️

Happy EPA SepticSmart Week! This week, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency brings attention to the importance of caring for and maintaining your septic system. To best protect your septic system, EPA recommends:

💧Avoiding showering while the dishwasher or laundry is running
💧Refraining from putting harsh chemicals or too much cleaner down the drain

Septic systems drain into our waterways and can leak out onto lawns if not properly maintained, sometimes carrying harmful bacteria. To keep people and waterways safe, take care of your septic system!

IEC is currently in its second year of monitoring the success of eelgrass planted in the Raritan Bay. The project was anticipated to be completed by Spring of 2026 but is now expanding into a second full year with additional data being collected, including core samples and light sensor data at a second pilot site. The Long Island Sound Pathogen Monitoring Network is in full swing for the 2026 season, with new groups and new sites gathering crucial f***l indicator bacteria data to fill pathogen data gaps throughout the Long Island Sound in New York and Connecticut. After any monitoring survey that collects data on one of our multiparameter sondes, we check for accuracy by doing a post-calibration check with standards of a known value for every parameter we measured. This helps us ensure high-quality data in the field. Here, two of our analysts perform a post-cal check after our first June run for Unified Water Study this past Wednesday!

Weekly sampling on the Harlem River looked different every week this month as the trees started to bloom. From the first bloom of cherry blossoms to the green trees covering the hill, April was a beautiful month at this site!

As it’s warming up again, we were able to install light and dissolved oxygen sensors in Staten Island for the second season! These sensors help to monitor conditions for planted eelgrass to see if they are in a good environment to survive.🌱
