Our parks and greenbelts are thriving habitats for wildlife, and this time of year coyotes are especially active as they support their pups in the den. Denning seasons last from March-November. Coyotes are typically most active at dawn and dusk, though they may be seen hunting or traveling during daytime hours. If you see a coyote during the day, make yourself look large and make noise to encourage it to move away. This helps shape coyote behavior and encourages them to avoid contact with people and pets. Help protect our feathered friends by turning off all non-essential lighting outside and inside from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. each night, especially during the upcoming peak migration period, September 5-October 29. Austin parks are natural areas where wildlife such as snakes and coyotes make their homes. Please enjoy these spaces safely, follow Leave No Trace principles, watch your step, and keep dogs leashed or within 6 feet of you when in off leash areas.
