We are so happy to have had .c.mamacita for the past few months, taking over the Torpedo Factory Art Center's Post-Grad Residency in Studio 314!

Lisa Brown’s work explores the intersections of community, memory, and resistance, centering the experiences of Black women whose narratives are often silenced by systemic oppression. She uses material, storytelling, and engagement to highlight the strength found in everyday acts of survival and love. Her work is complex and layered, encouraging conversation between the piece and its viewers.

During Lisa’s time at the residency, she has hosted several community events and work on the next steps of her career, exploring what type of art she wants to create next.

Create a Halloween costume, wearable, or mask that really lights up. We’ll provide the materials and guidance; you bring your imagination.

Start with clothing or an old-fashioned paper-bag mask, then add lights using easy, ready-to-go electro-luminescent wire—or take it a step further and learn to wire your own lights using copper tape. We’ll provide the materials and guidance; you bring your imagination. No electronics experience required!

We’re excited to welcome Lisa Brown as the newest Post Grad Resident to the Torpedo Factory Art Center!

Lisa Brown is an artist born and raised in Washington, D.C. Her work explores the intersections of community, memory, and resistance, centering the experiences of Black women whose narratives are often silenced by systemic oppression. She works across sculpture, analog photography, and installation. This balance reflects both the structural violence Black women endure and the resilience, joy, and care that persist as acts of survival.
