WHAT COULD COME NEXT IN VIRGINIA'S REDISTRICTING BATTLE: "While any decision by the court was likely to be criticized, this one reeks of politics, both in its timing and result.

"The Supreme Court of Virginia invalidated the referendum by finding that the General Assembly failed to pass the amendment before an intervening election, not early enough to satisfy constitutional requirements.

"Its decision turned on the meaning of the word “election,” a term not explicitly defined in the Virginia Constitution. The one-vote majority concluded that the intervening election had effectively begun once early voting commenced, days before the Assembly acted, thereby invalidating the amendment process."

Ultimately, the most effective response to partisan manipulation remains free and fair elections, guest columnist David J. Toscano writes.

ARLINGTON GOP CHAIRMAN EXPLAINS ELECTION INTEGRITY: "Matthew Hurtt, chairman of the Arlington County Republican Committee in Virginia, told the Daily Mail: 'Election integrity is a core responsibility of local Republican committees.'

"He added that his 'professionally-run, volunteer-driven' operation has 'dozens of members who both work as election officials and volunteer as poll watchers.'"

Republicans, at the urging of President Donald Trump, are gearing up to 'protect the vote' ahead of November's midterm elections.

FBI RAIDS SEN. LOUISE LUCAS' EMPIRE: “The FBI on Wednesday raided the Portsmouth offices and a cannabis retail business co-owned by state Sen. L. Louise Lucas, the president pro tempore of the Virginia Senate and one of the most powerful Democrats in the state, as part of an ongoing corruption investigation, according to two federal law enforcement officials familiar with the matter.”
