Minister of State Serap Güler concluded a two-day visit to Rwanda, meeting President Paul Kagame, Interior Minister Ministry of Interior Rwanda Dr. Vincent Biruta and Rwanda's Defense Minister Juvenal Marizamunda to discuss bilateral relations and the regional situation. She also discussed urban mobility with Rwanda Ministry of Infrastructure with the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), and cooperation with German businesses including Volkswagen Rwanda and Brussels Airlines. Exchanges with civil society and the Nyamirambo women's center preceded a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, where she paid tribute. Germany remains committed to partnership, remembrance and sustainable peace in the region.

And this year's Nobel Prize winners give us plenty of reasons to celebrate!

🇩🇪 Two German scientists, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel, have been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, alongside American scientist Karl Deisseroth.

Their groundbreaking work on optogenetics has transformed how scientists study the brain, using light to activate and control specific nerve cells. 🧠💡

Meanwhile, Africa is celebrating a remarkable achievement of its own!

🇿🇦 South African human rights champion Navi Pillay has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her lifelong efforts to advance international law, justice, and human rights ⚖️.

From scientific discoveries that deepen our understanding of life to courageous efforts that defend human dignity, this year's laureates remind us of the power of knowledge, determination, and innovation 👏.

The call for the DAAD In-Country/In-Region Scholarship Programme is out! This programme supports graduates from Sub-Saharan Africa who wish to pursue selected Master’s programmes in SDG-related fields.

📅 Application deadline: 12 November 2026

The current call offers scholarships at institutions in Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda, with a wide range of fields including:

🌱 Agricultural Economics
🌍 Climate Change & Disaster Management
🏥 Environmental Health
🔬 Molecular & Cell Biology of Infectious Diseases
💧 Water & Environmental Engineering
…and many other fields related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Around 250 experts, policymakers and practitioners come together in Berlin 🇩🇪 tomorrow, 6 October, for the Berlin Climate and Security Conference . They'll look at what happens when droughts, floods, displacement and pressure on resources begin to affect peace and security.

African perspectives are firmly part of the conversation. Speakers and organisations connected to Somalia 🇸🇴, Kenya 🇰🇪, Nigeria 🇳🇬, Ethiopia 🇪🇹 and the African Union will contribute to discussions ranging from climate-linked fragility and extremism to humanitarian action and new technologies with global security implications.

For many communities, climate change is not only an environmental challenge. It can shape where people live, how they make a living, and whether communities remain peaceful and resilient.

Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul will deliver the keynote as governments, international organisations, researchers and civil society meet to turn climate-security risks into practical solutions.

Democracy cannot be taken for granted. It must be safeguarded and practised anew every day.

Germany has experienced this first-hand throughout its history. Its first democracy was established in 1919 but came to an end in 1933. What followed were dictatorship, war and, eventually, the division of Germany, symbolised by the Berlin Wall.

Then, people demanded change.

The peaceful revolution in the GDR, free elections and international diplomacy paved the way for German reunification in 1990.

Germany’s story is its own. But questions of democracy, freedom and self-determination resonate far beyond its borders — including across African countries, each with their own histories and experiences.
