On Tuesday 19th May 2026 Dorset Police received calls regarding a male who was shouting and swearing at members of the public in the vicinity of The Yeatman Hospital and Cheap Street. He was located by Officers of the Sherborne Neighbourhood Policing Team who identified he was not from Sherborne. After ensuring his behaviour was not a result of a Mental Health need and he understood his actions Officers had a Section 35 notice authorised. This gives the Officers a power to ban people acting in an antisocial manner from an area that they determine. As this male was not from Sherborne he was ordered to leave the town and not return for a duration of twelve hours or he would be arrested. Officers then helped him on his way by taking him to the train station.

While we understand that some behaviour can be the result of a mental health crisis and treat such events appropriately this person clearly knew the consequences of his behaviour and we will not tolerate the upset it caused in our town and community. Thank you to the people who reported this and the patience and tolerance of those who witnessed his behaviour.

This afternoon a Sherborne resident received a telephone call from a scammer claiming to be a Police Officer from the Met Police.

The scammer claimed that he worked in the police fraud unit and that he had apprehended a criminal with a bag full of cloned bank cards from the Sherborne area. The scammer then asked the recipient of the call to write down his fictitious ‘badge details’ so they could call the Met Police and verify they were a genuine officer, (Criminals can keep telephone lines open after you have hung up and pretend to be an organisation you are trying to call).

When questioned by the recipient of the call the scammer hung up. The call came from an undisclosed telephone number.

If the potential victim had continued to speak to the scammer, they would have proceeded to ask for the victim’s bank card details claiming they needed them to match up with the fictitious cloned bank card.

Remember:
If a caller claims to be a police officer and asks for money, bank details, or to transfer funds to a ‘safe account,’ hang up immediately.

In response to complaints received from members of the public and local businesses Sherborne Neighbourhood Police Team officers carried out a proactive covert neighbourhood operation in the town centre to target motorists contravening traffic signs and prohibitions.

One vehicle was seen to reverse through the no entry signs at the bottom of cheap street and was dealt with by issuing a fixed penalty notice. The driver will now receive penalty points on their driving licence.

Moving forward these operations will continue and the issue of the lack of bollards at the bottom of Cheap Steet has been raised with the Town Council.

A word to the wise (who will hopefully pass this on to the unwise as well) - there are two weather related warnings that have been issued by the Met Office for the next forty-eight hours:
There is a YELLOW warning of ICE that begins at ten o’clock tonight and ends at nine o’clock in on tomorrow morning. With all the rain we have been having this creates the potential for some hazardous driving conditions especially for roads that will not be treated of which we have a lot in our area. Please drive with extra care and caution in the morning.

There is a YELLOW warning of RAIN that begins at midday tomorrow and runs until nine o’clock in the morning on Tuesday. On top of all the other rain we have had this created the potential for some flooding so again please be aware and drive carefully. If you see water covering the road and are not sure how deep it is – don’t risk it – find an alternative route.

As an aside, those of you who use Underdown Hollow, the road that joins the A30 at Babylon hill to Bradford Abbas, it is still blocked after a minor landslip and tree collapse so make plans to use an alternative route tomorrow.
