August…what a month!

In August, we responded to 42 calls!

That doesn’t count all our regular checks, appliance cleaning and maintenance, training days, drill nights or any other task to keep us ready at a moments notice.

This time is also not including the incident hours from our firefighters who also work full time at other stations in the region.

This equates to 100’s of hours dealing with a wide range of incidents, such as the major incidents, a barn fire, numerous field/crop fires, heath fires, property fires, road traffic collisions and standby’s at several other stations just to name a few.

We apologise for not being very proactive with our social media posts, but we’ve had quite a bit on our plates; we will try harder!

August felt long and, at times tiring, but the love of doing what we do does not disappear.

Thank you for your on-going support…we all appreciate it!

Last night Sherborne said goodbye to firefighter Lance Rylatt.

Lance started his fire service career at Sturminster Newton Fire Station back in 2012. Lance later joined Sherborne Fire Station on 1st October 2024 and provided Sherborne with much needed day cover whilst working in the town.

Lance was presented with his Certificate of Service by Chief Fire Officer Andy Cole, Lance was joined by his sister and partner.

Everyone at Sherborne wishes Lance all the best for the future and his new adventure.

Do you think you have what it takes to join our team? Why not pop along to one of drill nights and meet the crew, every Wednesday evening 19:00 -21:30

If you see our vehicles out and about, and think they're looking a bit grubby, there's a very good reason - with most of our Service area under a hosepipe ban, we've cancelled routine vehicle washing until further notice.

Roadworthiness will of course be maintained, and we will continue to train as usual, just without spraying water.

Essential water usage at fires will continue, with the support of our water companies.

We're doing our bit - are you?

There was a large industrial property fire overnight near Buckland Newton, and smoke is still rising from the scene. If you’re local and concerned, please keep doors and windows closed.

Please don’t call us on 999 to report someone having a controlled barbecue or bonfire, we don’t have the authority to intervene - tonight’s emergency alert was a welcome reminder about responsible behaviour.

Like every fire service at present, our Control room is extremely busy so please only call 999 in an emergency.

🌞 starts with one simple message: enjoy the outdoors responsibly.

Whether you're heading to the beach, exploring the countryside or spending time in your local park, small actions can make a big difference.

✔️ Take your litter home.
🚭 Dispose of smoking materials safely.
🔥 Avoid barbecues, fire pits and campfires in the countryside. Bring a picnic instead.
📞 If you spot a fire, move to a place of safety and call 999 immediately.

Together, we can help protect our countryside, wildlife and communities this summer.

☀️🚒 It’s been a busy start to the summer, with the hot weather bringing increased demand on our firefighters and support staff. We’d like to say a huge thank you to those who have been looking out for our hardworking firefighters and and providing refreshments to keep them going at incidents.

Have you recently had an experience with Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service that you’d like to share? Whether you’d like to compliment a member of staff, recognise great service, raise a concern, or make a complaint, we’d love to hear from you.

Your feedback helps us celebrate great work, learn from experiences and continue improving the services we provide.
