Red Deer Homeless Foundation We help organizations, governments, funders, and community leaders work together to prevent, address and reduce homelessness. We don’t provide direct services.

We make those services stronger by connecting the dots.

Red Deer spends $35.5 million annually on crisis responses that do not resolve homelessness.
That cost reaches far beyond shelters. It includes emergency healthcare, policing, corrections, social services and lost economic productivity.

If current trends continue, the cumulative cost could exceed half a billion dollars over the next decade.
It's time to make some proactive changes.

Distance isn’t measured only in kilometres.

It can be measured in bus rides.
Wait lists.
Paperwork.
Missed appointments.
Repeated assessments.

And having to tell your story all over again.

When services are coordinated in one location, some of those barriers can become smaller.

Project Nexus is designed to make the path through the system clearer so more time can be spent moving towards stability instead of moving between services repetitively.

It's not always about finding housing. It's about staying housed.

Haven for Hope, an integrated homelessness response campus in San Antonio, brings more than 70 partner organizations together in one coordinated location. The model has reported housing retention rates of more than 90% after one year.

While we aren't in San Antonio, evidence from integrated models elsewhere helps show what can become possible when services are connected. Project Nexus is being built around this exact principle but with a made-in-Red Deer approach.

Better connections can help create more lasting outcomes.

What does success for Project Nexus look like?

It looks like someone knowing where to go for help.

Getting connected to health care or recovery support without having to start over each time.
Having a clearer path towards housing and the support to stay housed.

It's about helping people move forward and finding a place they can call home.

Collaboration and coordination are not the same thing.

Collaboration means organizations work together.
Coordination asks whether the entire system works together from the perspective of the person trying to navigate it.

When we're well coordinated there's
✅ Easy access to the next service needed
✅ Organizations with clear pathways between them
✅ Less unnecessary barriers

Red Deer already has considerable collaboration.
Project Nexus creates an opportunity to strengthen the coordination around it.

World Homeless Day is October 10

We could talk about homelessness, but we'd rather talk about what it takes to end it.

Emergency shelter matters. But so does health care, mental health supports, recovery, housing navigation and community connections.

Unfortunately, when each part operates separately, people fall through the spaces between them.

That's why we're building systems like Project Nexus that make stability easier to reach and sustain.

If we want to end homelessness rather than manage it, what needs to change?

73% vs. 32%

That's the difference in stable housing outcomes between people who received housing with coordinated supports like Project Nexus and those receiving standard services. (At Home/Chez Soi study)

The evidence is clear.
Designing Project Nexus around coordination, access to support and pathways to stable housing is what can really move the needle with homelessness in Red Deer.

It's finally official!

We are pleased to share an important milestone for the Red Deer Homeless Foundation: we have officially received registered charitable status from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), effective April 1, 2026.

For us, charitable status is about more than organizational growth. It is an opportunity to deepen our connection with the community and create more ways for people to be part of a shared response to homelessness.

Those wishing to support our work can now make a donation here: https://ow.ly/3WvJ50ZUI51

Thank you to FortisAlberta for supporting the Leadership Luncheon as a Production Sponsor.

Community events like these are made possible by organizations that recognize the value of bringing people together to learn, connect and share ideas about how we can end homelessness in Red Deer.

We appreciate FortisAlberta’s support in helping make this year’s Leadership Luncheon possible. 👏

We hope you’ll join us. Registration link is on our website, see link in our bio! 😊

It's like a game of musical chairs.

Imagine 10 people circling 9 chairs. When the music stops, one person is left standing. Sure, there may be reasons why that one person didn't get a seat. But can we explain why there aren't enough chairs for everyone in the first place?

This is what it's like for people experiencing homelessness.
Low-income housing is becoming less available, like chairs being taken away.

That isn't to say that individual issues such as addiction and mental illness aren't key concerns; they can be.
Supply of affordable housing, however, is always an issue.

That's the benefit of Project Nexus. It's one campus where the one person left standing will have access to multiple services they may need while also ensuring there is a clear path to stable housing.
