Despite what we’ve come to associate it with, high tea wasn’t originally the fancy, delicate affair you might be picturing. The name actually comes from the height of the table it was served at — a higher dining table — and was traditionally a heartier evening meal enjoyed by the working class.

The dainty sandwiches, cakes, beautiful china and leisurely afternoon gathering? That’s afternoon tea. 🫖🍰

Consider this your little piece of tea-time history from Lady Ellis — and permission to politely correct everyone at your next “high tea.” 😉
