Rolling up a sleeve to support our community during a difficult time. 🩸
In light of the recent tragedy at CFB Wainwright, our thoughts are with the CanadianArmedForces members, their families, and everyone in our Northern Lights Scouting community affected by this devastating event.
With members still in critical condition, Canadian Blood Services is in vital need of blood and plasma donations. Taking an hour out of your day to donate is a direct, tangible way to support their medical care and recovery.
If you are able, please consider booking an appointment at blood.ca. Every donation makes a difference. ❤️

The Scouting movement and the Armed Forces share a long and intertwined history. Our founder, Lord Robert Baden-Powell, drew heavily on his military background when creating the Scouts, and Canadian Scouts proudly stepped up to serve as stretcher-bearers, civil defence volunteers, and community supporters during the World Wars. Today, that connection remains deeply personal. Many families within our Northern Lights Scouting community are current or former members of the military.

Because of these close ties, our community is feeling the weight of the tragic training incident that occurred at CFB Wainwright this past weekend. A rapidly moving grass fire claimed the lives of Canadian Armed Forces members and injured many others. We want to acknowledge that some of our Scouting families are directly affected by this devastating event, and our thoughts are with everyone navigating this unimaginable loss.

For those looking for ways to help, we have compiled a list of actions to support the affected families and recovering members:

GET WELL MESSAGES FOR INJURED MEMBERS
The Edmonton Military Family Resource Centre / CRFM d'Edmonton is collecting messages of support and encouragement for the hospitalized members. You can drop off your messages in person at the Edmonton MFRC during operational hours until the end of the month, or email them directly to [email protected].

BOOKS OF REMEMBRANCE
The Edmonton Military Family Resource Centre / CRFM d'Edmonton also has Books of Remembrance available for the community to sign in honour of the fallen members. These books will be given to their families as a lasting expression of our community's condolences. You can sign the books in person at the Edmonton MFRC until early next month.

DONATE BLOOD AND PLASMA
With members remaining in critical condition, Canadian Blood Services is in vital need of blood and plasma donations. Booking an appointment to donate at blood.ca is a direct and critical way to support their medical care.

As Scouts, we are here to support each other through difficult times. If youth, families, or Scouters in our NLC community need support or resources to help process this tragedy, please reach out to your section leaders, Group Commissioner, or the Council Leadership Team.

A Thanksgiving Hello

As many of us gather this Thanksgiving weekend, I want to acknowledge that not everyone observes Thanksgiving, and this season can mean different things to different people. For some, it is a time of gratitude and celebration. For others, it may be a time for reflection on our shared history and the diverse experiences that shape our communities today.

This year, I am especially grateful for our volunteers' resilience. At a time when life feels busier, more complex, and more expensive, you continue to show up for young people. Through your dedication, creativity, and commitment, adventures keep happening, friendships are built, and youth get opportunities to grow and thrive.

Thank you for everything you do, both seen and unseen. Northern Lights Council is stronger because of you.

Wishing you a weekend of reflection, connection, and gratitude, however you choose to spend it.

Thank you for helping make the adventure happen.

Council Commissioner, Northern Lights Council

Please review the information, participate in consultation sessions and surveys. Share your perspectives!

💬 You spoke. We listened. Now we’re coming back to you.

In Spring 2025, volunteers and staff shared what they wanted to see from Scouts Canada’s approach to volunteer performance management. That feedback, operational experience, and trends, has helped shape a proposed new framework. Now, we want your perspective on what comes next.

Join us for Round 2 of the Volunteer Performance Management Consultation to learn about the proposed changes, including four new pathways for addressing volunteer support, conflict, role suitability and conduct concerns.

Most importantly, we want to hear from you:
💚 What’s working?
💬 What concerns you?
⚖️ Have we found the right balance between volunteer support, local responsibility, fairness and accountability?

🏈 What a night at Edmonton Elks Scouts Night for Northern Lights Council Scouting Groups!

From an incredible turnout in the stands to an unforgettable sleepover under the lights at Commonwealth Stadium, it was an absolute blast celebrating Scouting with our community. The Elks winning in OT was the icing on the cake! A massive thank you to everyone who came out to cheer, camp, and make this event such a success!

We also want to give a special shout-out to our incredible organizers—thank you to Norm Kerr, Susan Tendler-Kerr, , and all the other hardworking NLC volunteers behind the scenes to bring this epic experience together.

Finally, thank you to the Edmonton Elks Football Club for being a great community partner.

Yesterday was a wonderful Grizzly Den pitch day! Over the course of the afternoon, the Grizzlies got to hear about the epic plans of groups who applied for Grizzly Den funding and present cheques to the successful young adventurers!

The Grizzly Den is an excellent program enabling youth to go on bigger expeditions that may otherwise be limited by funding. Well done to the groups who showed up and special thanks to the Northern Lights Scout foundation!
