Canada Energy Regulator The Canada Energy Regulator (CER) is Canada’s national energy regulator and this is an official Government of Canada page.

French: https://www.facebook.com/REC.CER/ The CER regulates pipelines, power lines, energy development and trade in the Canadian public interest. Canada’s energy landscape is constantly evolving, defined by the ever growing interest from the public in this country’s energy system. As Canada’s federal energy regulator, the CER knows it has a vital role to play in this system – protecting what matters most: lands, water, environment, jobs, communities, safety, and well-being. Regulating with excellence or “regulatory excellence” drives what the CER does and how it does it. From the day to day activities to new initiatives, the CER consistently strives to set the bar a little bit higher - because Canadians deserve a credible regulator they can rely on. One that provides assurance it will always take the steps necessary to protect them and the environment; one that provides neutral fact based energy information; one that provides multiple platforms for meaningful engagement. Adding Facebook to the CER’s social media toolkit provides another avenue for us to reach out. We welcome your input, ideas and conversations, and look forward to engaging with you online.

Five years of pipeline data. One place to explore it: https://ow.ly/caUF5102w2N

What changed across Canada’s CER-regulated pipeline system from 2021 to 2025? Our new publication brings together historical data and analysis on energy market trends, pipeline capacity and utilization, apportionment, tolls and financial resources.

One finding that caught our attention: The Trans Mountain Expanded System provided greater access to overseas markets, and the share of Canadian crude oil exports going to destinations outside the United States rose from 2% in 2021 to 10% in 2025.

New CER report explores how additional pipeline capacity shaped Canadian energy markets: https://ow.ly/aKvu51027Mg

Canada’s pipeline system changed significantly between 2021 and 2025. Major systems added capacity and reached new international markets, while growing energy production kept them highly utilized.

Our latest report brings the data together to show how crude oil, natural gas and other energy products move across Canada and to domestic, U.S. and overseas markets.

Strong emergency response starts long before an emergency happens. https://ow.ly/1qZi50ZZUfZ

It starts with building relationships, understanding local networks and learning how community, municipal and provincial organizations support the people who rely on them.

Last month, our Inspection Officers connected with emergency management partners in Quebec to learn more about how community organizations prepare for emergencies, strengthen community and maintain critical services.

These relationships help strengthen coordination and contribute to a more effective response when communities need it most.

Keeping Canada’s energy systems safe means being ready for cyber threats.

We are focused on finding ways to prevent cyberattacks from happening in the first place. We make sure companies are following cybersecurity requirements that help protect these systems from cyberattacks and are always looking for ways to improve.

Two important firsts on the Westcoast Sunrise Expansion Project demonstrate how environmental protection and Indigenous inclusion come together in regulatory oversight.

Our Inspection Officers and Lheidli T'enneh Land Guardians conducted Sunrise's first environmental field inspection during early construction near McLeod Lake, B.C. The inspection also marked the first use of the Indigenous Monitoring program on the project.

The inspection included mainline and facility upgrades, as well as preparation work for a watercourse crossing at the Parsnip River.

Working together in the field helps build relationships. It also strengthens our shared understanding of the environmental considerations associated with energy infrastructure projects and helps turn observations into action.

Together, We Make a Difference! We kicked off our annual Government of Canada Workplace Charitable Campaign (GCWCC - CCMTGC) this past week with an uplifting speech from United Way Ambassador Hervé Lamah. Thank you for inspiring us to step up for change in our communities this GCWCC campaign.

CER is proud to take part in Canada’s leading workplace charitable campaign every year. GCWCC supports at-risk Canadians by raising awareness and donations for United Way and Health Partners. Together, we can each place a brick on the path to change.
