The Adams County Emergency Management Agency wishes everyone a safe and frightfully fun Halloween!

As families across Adams County prepare for an evening of costumes, candy, and trick-or-treating, we want to share a few important safety reminders to help keep everyone safe.

🍬 CANDY SAFETY

* Parents and guardians should inspect candy before children enjoy their treats.
* Avoid treats with opened, damaged, or unusual packaging.
* Be mindful of food allergies and potential choking hazards, especially for younger children.

🔦 STAY VISIBLE & WALK SAFELY

* Carry a flashlight, use glow sticks, or wear reflective accessories.
* Use sidewalks whenever possible. Where sidewalks aren’t available, walk facing oncoming traffic.
* Cross streets at intersections or designated crosswalks, and look both ways before crossing.
* Keep younger children with a responsible adult and establish a meeting location in case anyone becomes separated.
* Remember, many of our rural Adams County roads have limited lighting, narrow shoulders, and no sidewalks. Visibility is especially important!

🚗 DRIVERS, SLOW DOWN!

* Reduce your speed in neighborhoods and areas with trick-or-treating activities.
* Watch for children who may unexpectedly enter the roadway or cross between parked vehicles.
* Put down the phone and eliminate distractions.
* Use extra caution when entering or exiting driveways.
* Avoid parking where you could block emergency vehicles or obstruct visibility at intersections.

🏠 COSTUME & HOME SAFETY

* Choose costumes that fit properly and don’t obstruct vision or movement.
* Keep porches, steps, and walkways clear of obstacles.
* Consider battery-operated candles instead of open flames in jack-o’-lanterns.
* Visit well-lit homes that are welcoming trick-or-treaters.
* Keep pets safely secured when greeting visitors.

📱 A LITTLE PREPARATION GOES A LONG WAY!

* Check the weather forecast before heading out and dress appropriately.
* Make sure cellphones are charged.
* Plan your trick-or-treating route and establish a time to return home.
* Make sure children know how to contact a parent, guardian, or trusted adult.
* In the event of an emergency, call 911.

As of 4:12 PM, radar indicated a strong thunderstorm approximately 5 miles northeast of West Union, moving east at 30 MPH.

💨 HAZARDS:

* Wind gusts up to 45 MPH
* Strong thunderstorms

⚠️ POSSIBLE IMPACTS:

Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured outdoor objects.

As of 5:15 PM, the storm was located approximately 9 miles south of Peebles, moving southeast at 25 MPH.

HAZARDS:
• Wind gusts up to 50 MPH
• Penny-size hail

IMPACTS: Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Hail may cause minor damage to vegetation.

URGENT - PLEASE SHARE

The National Weather Service in Wilmington has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for east-central Adams County and west-central Scioto County until 4:30 PM EDT.

At 4:07 PM EDT, a severe thunderstorm was located near Peebles, moving east at 20 mph.

HAZARDS:
• Wind gusts up to 60 MPH
• Penny-size hail up to 0.75 inches

SOURCE: Radar indicated.

IMPACTS: Damaging winds may cause damage to trees and power lines.

LOCATIONS IMPACTED:
Rarden, Wamsley, Cedar Mills, and Dunkinsville.

⚠️ SAFETY MESSAGE:
Move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Stay away from windows and remain indoors until the storm has passed.

A Flood Watch is in effect for Adams County, Ohio from 7:00 PM Sunday, September 20 through Monday morning, September 21.

Showers and thunderstorms producing heavy rainfall are expected overnight. Rainfall totals of 1 to 3 inches, with locally higher amounts, are possible. Combined with already saturated ground, the heavy rain could lead to flash flooding.
