Maritime Administration - MARAD The Maritime Administration is the agency within the U.S. Department of Transportation dealing with waterborne transportation. merchant marine.

The Maritime Administration works in many areas involving ships and shipping, shipbuilding, port operations, vessel operations, national security, environment, and safety. Its programs promote the use of waterborne transportation and its seamless integration with other segments of the transportation system, and the viability of the U.S. The Maritime Administration is also charged with maintaining the health of the merchant marine, since commercial mariners, vessels, and intermodal facilities are vital for supporting national security, and so the agency provides support and information for current mariners, extensive support for educating future mariners, and programs to educate America's young people about the vital role the maritime industry plays in the lives of all Americans. The Maritime Administration also maintains a fleet of cargo ships in reserve to provide surge sealift during war and national emergencies, and is responsible for disposing of ships in that fleet, as well as other non-combatant Government ships, as they become obsolete.

Maritime fact of the day! ⚾️⚓️

Ever wonder why the Milwaukee Brewers wear navy blue and gold? It turns out the franchise has a direct maritime connection.

Before moving to Milwaukee in 1970, they played one season as the Seattle Pilots—named after the harbor pilots who steer ships through Puget Sound. The team went bankrupt just days before Opening Day, so Milwaukee bought the franchise, removed the word "PILOTS" from the jerseys, and stitched "BREWERS" right over it.

There was no time to order new uniforms, which is why a team named for the brewing industry wears a maritime color scheme today! 🍻🧢

Congratulations to our World Series Champions!

THE WAIT IS OVER. YOUR BREWERS ARE ON TOP OF THE BASEBALL WORLD

⚓ STATE MARITIME ACADEMIES ARE TURNING HIGH SCHOOLSTUDENTS INTO FUTURE DECK OFFICERS & MARINE ENGINEERS! 🚢💨

When State Maritime Academies team up with local school districts, high schools become powerful launching pads for high-demand maritime careers—as shown at Texas A&M University at Galveston! 🛠️🌊

Through a partnership with Galveston ISD's Ball High School and Galveston Career Connect, students aren't just sitting in a classroom reading about ship operations and marine engineering—they're stepping straight into TAMUG's Machine/Welding Shop!

As Reece Ogden, '26 demonstrates, there are many paths to a professional maritime career, here is his:

High School & Dual Credit: Graduated from Ball High School in 2022 while simultaneously earning an associate degree from Galveston College and his welding certifications.

University Internship: Completed a high school internship in TAMUG's Machine/Welding Shop, gaining hands-on industrial skills in fabrication, safety management, and maintenance.

Scholarship & Campus Leadership: Earned a college scholarship to Texas A&M Maritime Academy, worked a campus job, and served as a teaching assistant helping other students learn shop operations.

4-Year Degree: Graduated in August 2026 with a Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation from Texas A&M at Galveston.

Career Goal: Launching his career on commercial ships with plans to work his way up to ship captain! 🎓✨
