Humane Indiana Wildlife Rehabilitation Center provides expert medical care for injured and orphaned animals native to Indiana.

The education center provides educational opportunities for community groups, schools, and internships for college students. The Moraine Ridge Wildlife Rehabilitation Center was founded in 1997 by a group of wildlife rehabilitators and enthusiasts. Their primary mission then and now is to rescue, rehabilitate and return orphaned and injured wildlife to the wild. A second parallel and equally essential part of the mission is to provide educational opportunities for the community that promotes informed and humane interaction with native wildlife. In 2003 two acres of wooded, rural land adjacent to a state designated wildlife habitat was donated to the organization and in 2005 ground was broken to construct a building designed to serve their mission. The building was completed in 2008 with widespread community support, including a challenge grant from the Porter County Convention Recreation and Visitors Commission, generous cash donations and substantial gifts of labor and materials from individuals. For many years Moraine Ridge depended almost entirely on volunteers to accomplish its mission. In 2014 MRWRC became a subsidiary of the Humane Society Calumet Area. This brought about the ability to hire professional staff and gave access to a sophisticated infrastructure which allows us to substantially expand the scope of our mission and services.

These two young opossums have had a rough start to life. They were recently found roaming a property, without mom, and were brought to the center for care. These two needed rehabilitative assistance, not only because of their small size, but because of the condition of their fur! Both opossums joeys have very short, regrowing, fur on their hind ends and their heads.

What is interesting is that the fur that is growing in, and the skin, all look very healthy. They have no signs of mange or external causes to assume bacterial infections. That doesn't mean, however, that they don't have a hidden infection or even a fungal infection that could have caused this. As a result we are treating them with antibiotics and have bathed them as well as ensuring that they have a well-balanced nutritional diet. At their size, they are also still needing formula.

While these two may look a bit rough right now, we are looking forward to seeing them grow into fully-furred healthy opossums while in our care. Because of their size now, they will be overwintering with our team and will be released next spring.

Just when you think baby season is coming to an end, and all of your August/September juvenile squirrels are weaned and moved outside... SURPRISE!! Brand new eyes-closed baby squirrel!

This little 85-gram Eastern Grey Squirrel was displaced from his nest when his tree was cut down yesterday. Despite efforts to attempt to reunite him with mom, he is now in our care, where he will remain until at least next May. At time age, he is still being fed formula four times a day, which means he goes home with our staff at night to receive one, final PM feeding. As he grows, and his number of feedings decrease, he will be able to remain at the rehab center and placed with squirrels his own age. Right now, as he is transitioning onto formula, he is alone so that we can monitor his digestive health.

Enrichment is an important component of animal care. Each day, our team provides something new to our patients and ambassadors to ensure that they are receiving mental stimulation. Today, our ambassador bobcat, Diego, was given a box (which is enriching itself) that had been sprayed with a new scent for Diego to explore.
