Porter County Residents!! Do not miss out on our LAST Household Hazardous Waste Collection of 2026! 🚨

NEW : WE ARE NOT ACCEPTING LATEX PAINTS THIS YEAR AT THE HHW EVENTS. We have a special latex paint + tire recycling event on October 17th, 2026. But other than that, NO LATEX PAINT. (spray paints, paint thinners, paint st*****rs, and stains are OK to bring).

This FREE collection event helps Porter County residents to properly dispose of hazardous waste that can be found in your homes. Examples include cleaning supplies, oils, chemicals, fertilizers, and more which can pose significant risks to our ecosystems and wildlife if not handled correctly.

HHW HAS US TRANSFORMING!! ✨️

TODAY!! Come to the Expo Center to ♻️ recycle + properly dispose ♻️ of your Household Hazardous Waste!!

We will be here from 9am-2pm at the Porter County Expo Center!

You may or may not see Keri or Chuck because this event has them TRANSFORMING!

Join us TOMORROW, Thursday, September 3rd, 2026 from 9-2pm at the Porter County Expo Center to properly discard your hazardous waste.

This can include old smoke detectors and batteries.

COMPOST SITES TO REOPEN ON FRIDAY, AUGUST 28TH

The Portage, Valparaiso, and Boone Grove Compost Sites will REOPEN for Porter County residents ONLY at 8am on Friday, August 28th.

Starting Friday, August 28th, the compost site hours will resume Mon-Sat.

NEW INFORMATION !!

Going forward, we will be checking ID's and documenting the names + addresses from those who drop off materials at all of our compost sites.

Please be patient with us as this is a new system! Names and addresses MUST be legible.

We wanted to thank everyone for their patience this week while we sorted out the storm debris and made room to collect more! ✨️

We are sending our thoughts out to everyone during this time!

We are here to help as much as we can! 🩵

COMPOST SITE UPDATES, PLEASE READ 💚

Our compost sites are NEAR CAPACITY and cannot accept additional storm debris at this moment. To relieve that pressure, the County will be announcing additional drop-off sites as soon as possible where residents can bring storm-related vegetation.

COMPOST SITE UPDATES:

✨️ The Portage Compost Site will be CLOSED Wednesday, August 26th and Thursday, August 27th.

✨️ The Valparaiso Compost Site will be open but will not be accepting any organic materials starting Wednesday, August 26th through Thursday, August 27th.
The site will NOT TAKE BRUSH, YARD WASTE, LOGS. ETC related to the storm.
The site WILL be open for drop-off recycling, electronic, light bulb, and battery recycling.
THERE IS ALSO NO LOADING FOR MULCH THIS WEEK.

✨️ Boone Grove Compost Site is business as usual for the moment .

CONTRACTORS OR RESIDENTS: can contact either Duneland Materials (219-364-0030) or Crisman Sand Company (219-462-3114) for material dumping for a cost.

Our compost sites are still open for dropping-off storm debris.

FYI - we will NOT be loading any materials this week due to the surplus of people at the sites daily. This means we will not be loading mulch for residents.

Recycling District compost sites are OPEN and accepting brush from Aug 11 storm

The Recycling and Waste Reduction District of Porter County (RWRD) is reporting that all three of its public compost sites are open and accepting brush from the Aug. 11 storm.

If you’re a Porter County resident, you may bring your tree limbs and branches, brush, and leaf debris to any of these three compost sites:

*VALPARAISO, 2150 W. Lincolnway. Open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

*PORTAGE, 6451 U.S. 12. Open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

*BOONE GROVE, 546S 400W. Open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

OTHER RESOURCES

*Call Southern Baptist Disaster Relief (SBDR) at 330-690-4883 for assistance in cutting debris in your yard or community. PLEASE NOTE: SBDR is NOT able to haul your debris, just cut it.

*For a fee, the Crisman Sand Company (219-462-3114) and Duneland Materials (219-364-0030) will take your storm debris. Call for rates and hours of operation.
