Beginning October 30, 2026, the Vermont DMV will send Notices of Intent to customers with outstanding debts owed to the DMV. If you receive a notice:

âś” Read it carefully and keep it for your records
âś” Pay your balance
• Online through myDMV.vermont.gov
• By phone at 802-828-2000
• By check or money order mailed with a copy of your notice to the address listed in the letter
âś” Know your rights
You have 30 days from the date of the notice to submit a written appeal.

⚠️ Not sure if a notice is legitimate?
Official DMV notices are sent by U.S. mail. The Vermont DMV will never demand payment by text message. If you have questions, log in to myDMV.vermont.gov or call us directly at 802-828-2000.

90 minutes.
That's how long some Vermont students spend riding to school each way when there aren't enough drivers.

The good news?
One more qualified driver can make a big difference. Smaller school buses require a regular driver's license and a Type II endorsement, with no DMV endorsement fee.

Step 1 of 5 to driving a school bus in Vermont is the easy one: a valid Vermont driver's license.

If you have one, you're already on your way. The smaller bus doesn't require a CDL. Call your local school or bus company, and they'll take you through the rest (a physical, a one-day clinic, a knowledge test, a road test), usually in a few weeks.

Myth: You need a CDL to drive a school bus.

Fact: The smaller Type II school busses take a regular Vermont driver's license. Add a physical, a one-day clinic, a knowledge test, and a road test, and you're a school bus driver. There's no DMV fee for the Type II endorsement.

Vermont schools need drivers in every county. Start by calling your local school or bus company; they'll walk you through the clinic and testing. See the steps: https://dmv.vermont.gov/CVO/school-bus
