One of the most important responsibilities for dog owners is also one of the simplest: dogs need to be leashed whenever they’re not in a fenced enclosure. Yes, your dog may be friendly, may respond well to commands, and may stay close to you, but a leash matters! Dogs can be unpredictable when they’re excited, scared or distracted.

There’s another side to the equation, too: not everyone is comfortable around dogs. And some pets may not respond well to an unfamiliar dog approaching. Keeping your dog leashed gives you more control and helps prevent an unexpected encounter from becoming a dangerous one.

UPDATE 8:55 AM: Crews have located a large water main break and leak. They are making repairs now.

For customers in the southeast corner of Springfield experiencing low water pressure, a boil water advisory is likely.

In an abundance of caution, please begin boiling water for 3-5 minutes before using it. We are working to determine which customers may be impacted by a boil water advisory and will begin sending official notifications as soon as possible.

Feels-like temperatures may exceed 105°F. Take breaks from the outdoors and drink plenty of water.

This week, Missouri was included on an expanded list of states impacted by a cyclosporiasis outbreak. Greene County saw an increase in cyclosporiasis cases over the month of July.

Typically, the Springfield-Greene County Health Department (SGCHD) investigates less than 10 cases of cyclosporiasis in a year. So far in 2026, we have seen 50 cases. 43 of these cases were reported in July.

In several states including Missouri, cyclosporiasis cases have been linked to iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico. In July, Taylor Farms issued a voluntary recall of iceberg lettuce products. Missouri was included in this recall and SGCHD’s health inspectors made sure affected products were removed from store shelves and restaurants in Greene County.

Opioid overdoses continue to affect individuals and families throughout our community. Because many ODs occur before emergency responders can arrive, increasing access to naloxone, which reverses the effects of an opioid OD, saves lives.

More than 25 24/7 naloxone distribution boxes are now available at various locations throughout Springfield. Thirteen of those are at Springfield, MO Fire Department stations. The boxes are checked and refilled as needed to help ensure continued access.

If you, a family member or someone you know could benefit from having naloxone on hand, please feel free to visit a fire station any time to obtain a naloxone kit, no questions asked.
