A flurry of brainstorming and excitement was shared as City project managers recently toured Downtown Springfield Association, Springfield Regional Arts Council and Springfield Economic Vitality Department staff through the Renew Jordan Creek Phase I construction site to discuss future events, programming and activation.

There is a gap in how cities and developers approach growth. Not in whether they want it, but in how they define success.

👷🏻 Developers are driven by financial feasibility. If the numbers don’t work, the project doesn’t happen.

🏛️Cities are responsible for the bigger picture. They have to think about infrastructure, long-term planning, and the cumulative impact of growth over time.

🏗️Both sides want development, but they are solving different problems.

Most of the friction we see in the development process comes from this gap. Understanding it can lead to more productive conversations, clearer expectations and better development outcomes for everyone.

The City’s Development Project Facilitator (aka Developer Whisperer) Samantha Payne is taking a deep dive into what she’s learned about development processes in a series of articles she’s written for the ICMA - International City/County Management Association.

Samantha oversees the progress of various development projects and collaborates directly with developers, designers and contractors to streamline the City's development review process.

The second of two public engagement sessions about data centers was held late this afternoon at The Library Center. Another capacity crowd meant another round of vibrant interaction between the presenters and interested citizens. Thank you to all who attended these sessions to share your input as the City of Springfield considers all facets of this important topic.

Following the implementation of an administrative delay on applications for potential data center developments in June, the City of Springfield and City Utilities will host a second public engagement session tomorrow evening to discuss the topic of potential data center development in Springfield.

No decisions have been made regarding future data center development or what a potential regulatory framework may look like.

Feedback is an important part of that process and will help inform the City’s consideration of whether new regulations or a broader regulatory framework may be appropriate.

City Council will receive an update on the Neighborhood Works+ program TODAY during its Lunch Workshop at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 31!

The SPRING Forward SGF 1/2-cent Sales Tax Citizen Advisory Board previously allocated $5 million for funding the program. City staff worked with residents to identify and prioritize improvements that make neighborhoods safer, more connected and more vibrant.

Thanks to everyone who submitted a project idea, came out to a zone meeting, or particiated in a NAC discussion!

Input from Thursday’s first public engagement event regarding data centers will prove valuable as the City of Springfield continues a community conversation. Responses from the approximately 200 people who attended, as well as those sharing sentiments via a public survey, published hotline and email address, will be reported to City Council later this fall.

An additional 80 people were not able to enter Thursday’s event due to venue capacity issues, so the City has put those residents on the top of the list for entrance into Tuesday’s event, scheduled for 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Hatch Auditorium at The Library Center. Those folks were provided a QR code to the survey as well.

The engagement events are structured in six separate stations, with City and City Utilities staff leading discussions about topics surrounding data center, such as electricity, water, sound, location and other matters. Tuesday’s event will be similar.
