Today, we were honored to participate in the 100th anniversary of the South Bend West Side Memorial Day Parade, a century-long tradition of honoring the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

The Portage Township Trustee Office was proud to join community members, veterans, families, and local organizations in commemorating this historic milestone and remembering the true meaning of Memorial Day.

Update on Karl King: After residents endured unreliable heat during freezing winter temperatures, the Indiana Attorney General has finalized an Assurance of Voluntary Compliance with the property owner.

This agreement includes:
• Heating system upgrades
• Multi-year state oversight and reporting
• Enhanced security measures
• On-site management presence
• Enforceable compliance through the AG’s office

Our office worked alongside residents to secure rental credits, escalate concerns, and push for accountability.

This is another step forward in raising housing standards across South Bend and making sure every resident has safe, habitable housing.

Thank you to the tenants who spoke up. We’ll keep doing the work.
