The City of South Bend is joining everyone around the nation in commemorating Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day and Freedom Day.

On June 19, 1865, enslaved African Americans were informed of their freedom and the Civil War had ended by federal troops in Galveston, Texas. Today, the City of South Bend is celebrating our African American community and culture.

Juneteenth officially became a holiday in South Bend on April 25, 2022.

The City of South Bend will be hosting two community engagement sessions to provide updates on the ongoing work at the former Drewryโ€™s Brewery Site.

The sessions will take place on Tuesday, June 23 and Wednesday, June 24 at the Near Northwest Neighborhood Community Center. Both meetings will run from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with presentations starting at 6:00 p.m. each day.

City officials will share updates on the cleanup work completed to date, outline next steps in site preparation and will present preliminary plans for future development. We encourage anyone interested to attend one of these sessions.

Beginning Thursday, June 18, crews will continue milling and paving operations on Ireland Road between Fellows Street and the western city limits, approximately 600 feet west of Burnett Drive, as part of the Ireland Road Pavement Project. Ireland Road will remain open to traffic; however, motorists should expect major delays and use an alternate route if possible.

Crews will begin by milling the outside lanes between Fellows Street and the western city limits, before paving those lanes. Traffic will then shift to allow milling and paving of the inside lanes.

Today, the City of South Bend announced a significant partnership with L+M Development Partners to rehabilitate and preserve the Beacon Heights Apartments through a comprehensive, multi-million-dollar renovation effort.

All units will be fully updated to improve living conditions while maintaining longโ€‘term affordabilityโ€”and importantly, the work will be done as a โ€œrenovation in place,โ€ so no residents will be displaced.

The City is investing $1.25M to support the project, which will help preserve a vital affordable housing community for years to come.
