This week, Marin County Sheriff’s SAR responded alongside multiple California SAR teams for a complex rescue of an injured subject on Mt Shasta.

The subject injured his leg on the Whitney glacier of Mt Shasta at 12,000 feet. Due to high winds, helicopters were unable to rescue the subject. Two USFS Shasta climbing rangers reached the subject to provide initial care. Siskiyou County Sheriff’s office requested mutual aid for an extended litter carryout. Marin SAR responded alongside Siskiyou County, Bay Area Mountain Rescue (BAMRU), Trinity County, and Oregon SAR teams.

Teams hiked 5,000 feet up to the subject and began an extraction including multiple technical rope evolutions. During the litter carryout, CHP H14 was able to land during a break in the weather and extract the subject. The ground teams then descended back to the trailhead, finishing late in the evening.

This rescue highlights the mutual aid system in California with multiple teams from different agencies working together towards a common goal.

We currently have eleven members deployed supporting this extended rescue for an injured climber on Mt. Shasta in Siskiyou County.

UPDATE: SUBJECT LOCATED ALIVE AND WELL.

Resources that responded included Marin Search and Rescue, the Sheriff's UAS Team, and Southern Marin Fire District. Also a huge thanks to the community that ultimately located her sitting in a parked car she was able access.

We are currently assisting Mill Valley Police Department in the search for missing 87-year-old female who walked away from The Redwoods retirement facility last night. Her walker was located by the sewer treatment plant. She has wavy gray hair and was wearing possibly a purple hat and purple puffy jacket. Please keep an eye out and if you live in Mill Valley, please check your yard.

One of the things that makes Marin SAR especially unique is our Youth Program. Members ages 14–18 train and serve alongside our adult members and play an important role in supporting our Mountain Rescue mission.

Perishable skills training for Rope Technicians on Labor Day weekend. Our team was out today on Mt. Tamalpais conducting high angle, steep angle and problem-solving evolutions. Maintaining skills is very important for nearly every aspect of Search And Rescue. Ongoing training ensures we are ready when the call comes.

August was another busy month for Marin SAR. Our team responded to seven SAR missions, including one extended incident that lasted three days. During two of these missions, search teams successfully located missing subjects and provided medical care. On another incident, team members completed a challenging multi-pitch technical rope recovery.

In addition to mission responses, our members participated in more than 12 training events during the month, continuing the consistent training necessary to maintain our operational readiness.

None of this would be possible without the tremendous dedication of SAR volunteers—not only from Marin, but from teams throughout California who routinely work together on mutual aid incidents. Their willingness to leave their families, jobs, and daily responsibilities to respond when needed makes a significant difference in the outcome of search and rescue missions.
Thank you to everyone who trained, responded, supported our missions, and worked alongside our allied SAR teams during another very active month.

This weekend Marin County Search and Rescue (SAR) members trained on US&R (Urban Search and Rescue) operations. With this assistance of Marin County Fire Departments US&R Team, Task Force 1, team members trained on a variety of skills including shoring, breaching, chainsaw operations, and moving large pieces of material with cribbing and pry bars. In the event of a large natural disaster such as an earthquake, team members can assist with operations to rescue victims from light wood frame structures.
