On Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at approximately 6:45 PM, Emergency Medical Services / 9-1-1 personnel were contacted regarding a vehicle collision which occurred on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard in Fairfax, in which a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle. Multiple first responders were immediately dispatched to the incident scene and located an unresponsive and unconscious male individual in the roadway having sustained multiple traumatic injuries. Emergent medical aid was provided but sadly, the subject pronounced deceased on scene.

The decedent has been positively identified as:
George PIKKARAINEN, a 91-year-old male from Fairfax.

A forensic postmortem examination with routine toxicology testing was completed. The cause and manner of death will be pending the conclusion of the investigations, which are being completed by the California Highway Patrol – Marin Division and the Marin County Sheriff’s Office - Coroner Division. No further information will be released by the Coroner Division at this time, as this is an active and ongoing investigation. Any further questions regarding the incident should be directed to the California Highway Patrol – Marin Division.

On Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at approximately 1:43 AM, a Marin County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Deputy observed a vehicle travelling approximately 100 MPH southbound on US101 near the Richardson Bay Bridge in Strawberry. The Deputy initiated a traffic enforcement stop on the vehicle near the Spencer Ave. exit.

Upon approaching the vehicle, the Deputy noticed approximately 14 fresh bullet holes in the vehicle. The Deputy contacted the sole occupant of the vehicle who stated he had just been engaged in a road rage incident in the vicinity of Novato. The driver became uncooperative with the Deputy and refused to exit the vehicle for the Deputy to safely obtain his statement and pat him down for weapons. The driver then abruptly put the car into drive and fled the scene.

The Deputy attempted to catch up with the driver but due to unsafe speeds over the Golden Gate Bridge, the Deputy terminated the pursuit. The San Francisco Police Department later recovered the vehicle unoccupied.

Sheriff’s Detectives identified the driver as 26-year-old Martin Zuniga Jr. of Novato. Later in the day, at approximately 6:00 PM, Sheriff’s Office Detectives located Zuniga in downtown Novato. Detectives placed Zuniga under arrest for Reckless Evading and Resisting Arrest. At the time of his arrest, Zuniga had a loaded .40 Caliber pistol with a high-capacity magazine in his possession along with suspected co***ne.

Zuniga was transported to the Marin County Jail where he was booked on the following charges:

-28000.2 CVC- Reckless Evading
-69 PC- Violently Resisting Law Enforcement
-29800 PC- Felon in Possession of a Firearm
-30305 (a) (1) PC- Felon in Possession of Ammunition
-11370.1 (a) H&S- Addict in Possession of a Firearm

This case remains under investigation by the Marin County Sheriff’s Office. Anyone who has information regarding any shooting or road rage incident the evening/early morning hours of June 15/16, 2026, is encouraged to call the Marin County Sheriff’s Office at 415-479-2311.

Camp Chance is designed to strengthen positive relationships between youth and their local law enforcement through shared experiences, teamwork, and adventure. Campers will enjoy exciting activities such as fishing, hiking, beach soccer, and other outdoor experiences, while also getting an inside look at law enforcement through interactive demonstrations and hands-on learning opportunities.

The Novato Police Department is investigating the in-custody death of an incarcerated person, housed at the Marin County Jail.

On June 12, 2026, at approximately 11:04 AM, a Deputy performing a routine check of people in the jail, found an incarcerated person in need of medical attention, located within their solely occupied cell. Deputies immediately requested a response from the San Rafael Fire Department (SRFD). Deputies on scene began to perform life-saving measures until SRFD arrived. San Rafael Fire Department arrived at approximately 11:12 AM.

The SRFD arrived at the Marin County Jail and continued life-saving measures, and transported the subject to Kaiser -Terra Linda but unfortunately, the incarcerated person was pronounced deceased at 12:07 PM.

The Sheriff’s Office requested the Novato Police Department to conduct an independent investigation into the death of the incarcerated person. The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office, Coroners Division, will handle the Coroner duties associated with the death. A post-mortem examination is scheduled for later this week.

Next of Kin of the decedent has already been notified.

No further information will be released from the Marin County Sheriff’s Office. Media inquiries related to the independent investigation should be directed to Novato Police Department and media inquiries related to the identification of the decedent should be directed to the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office.

In November ‘24 the Marin County Jail got a major facelift, due to the effort of Georgia Stahl-Ricco
Georgia is the 7th female to earn Eagle Scout in Troop 1015. Georgia was recently honored for her hard work and dedication to the community.

Georgia, along with members of her Troop and boys Troop 15 have worked alongside and the Marin County Parks Landscape Architects to ensure that California native plants are used in this project. The troop updated irrigation and replaced the soil to ensure a long life of the plants used.

Georgia invited Sgt Gary Wilbanks to the ceremony where she was honored.
