Happy Staff Pick Friday! Today's pick is Danez Smith's Homie and comes from Senior Library Assistant, Gen Dietzel, and Library Director, Lisa Hoffman.

Homie is a collection of poetry by Danez Smith about how friendship can save a person. Rooted in loss, love, and grief, this body of work explores a search for joy and intimacy in an increasingly violent and polarized nation.

Homie is unapologetically Black and q***r. Smith pulls no punches thematically or emotionally, hitting every beat relating to the give and take of community, the violence of racism and femmephobia, and the inherent grief that accompanies living in a marginalized and policed body and identity.

Sometimes, when people see poetry, they get scared. Don’t be. Homie is a great glimpse into the contemporary poetic landscape. We recommend this book to anyone looking to feel things deeply.

Happy Staff Pick Friday! Today’s recommendation is Natasha Siegel’s As Many Souls as Stars and comes from Senior Library Assistant Gen Dietzel.

As Many Souls As Stars is a romantic fantasy where Cybil Harding, the cursed first daughter of her family, and Miriam Richter, a literal demon, chase each other across centuries and battle for dominance in many lifetimes. Only one of them can win, but they can’t live without each other.

This book is completely out of my comfort zone, but it is absolutely incredible. These two women will find each other in every lifetime, and they truly mean that as a threat. The romantic element is so compelling because they never actually like each other, but they certainly need each other to survive. This is codependent yearning of every dark romantic’s dreams.

If you liked The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, you’ll love this.
