Happy Juneteenth!! As we celebrate the emancipation of formerly enslaved individuals across the nation, we want to take a moment to highlight the life of Junius Brickle. While in bo***ge, Junius labored on the construction of the NC Capitol. He survived to emancipation and to see his marriage to Delia Leach officially recognized in 1878. Our 11am guided tour of the Capitol has been cancelled Saturday, June 20th to accommodate the Carolina Hurricanes victory parade in downtown Raleigh. The Capitol will be open to the public for normal hours on Saturday, 10am-5pm, and our 1pm and 2pm guided tours will occur as scheduled that day. Thank you for your understanding!

Just a reminder! This summer, you can visit us on Sundays! The State Capitol is part of a time-limited pilot program to expand access to NC Historic Sites. We’ll be open from 1-5 p.m. on Sundays from June 14 – Aug. 2. Visit our website to learn more: historicsites.nc.gov/sunday-hours

We will offer public tours weekly at 2pm on Sundays!

Stop by the Capitol and see how we’re commemorating America’s 250th! Two new exhibits will be on display until August 1. The Spirit of ‘76 in North Carolina was developed in partnership with staff to explore Bicentennial festivities in the state. Another exhibit, People of Colonial North Carolina is on loan from America 250 NC and explores the individuals populating Revolutionary era NC.

The Capitol is closed to the public on Monday, May 25th in observance of Memorial Day. We will resume normal operating hours (9am-5pm) on Tuesday, May 26th.

Happy teacher appreciation week!! ✏️🎓🍎 At the Capitol, we are grateful for teachers today and everyday!! From field trip groups to educational programs, we love working with North Carolina’s teachers. We are especially appreciative for some of the former teachers who now serve as docents for tour groups at the Capitol. Sue Cook and Melanie Franklin, pictured here, spent decades in the classroom- and now continue to teach history to groups across the state!!
